Stanza 8.60.1

अग्न॒ आ या॑ह्य॒ग्निभि॒र्होता॑रं त्वा वृणीमहे | आ त्वाम॑नक्तु॒ प्रय॑ता ह॒विष्म॑ती॒ यजि॑ष्ठं ब॒र्हिरा॒सदे॑ ||

ágna ā́ yāhy agníbhir hótāraṁ tvā vr̥ṇīmahe ā́ tvā́m anaktu práyatā havíṣmatī yájiṣṭham barhír āsáde

Agni, come! With your fires, we choose you as our priest. Let the well-prepared offerings anoint you, as you sit on the sacred grass, O most worthy one to worship.

Stanza 8.60.2

अच्छा॒ हि त्वा॑ सहसः सूनो अङ्गिरः॒ स्रुच॒श्चर॑न्त्यध्व॒रे | ऊ॒र्जो नपा॑तं घृ॒तके॑शमीमहे॒ऽग्निं य॒ज्ञेषु॑ पू॒र्व्यम् ||

áchā hí tvā sahasaḥ sūno aṅgiraḥ srúcaś cáranty adhvaré ūrjó nápātaṁ ghr̥tákeśam īmahe 'gníṁ yajñéṣu pūrvyám

Indeed, towards you, O Angiras, son of Strength, the ladles move in the sacrifice. We seek you, O child of energy, with hair dripping ghee, O Agni, the foremost in rituals.

Stanza 8.60.3

अग्ने॑ क॒विर्वे॒धा अ॑सि॒ होता॑ पावक॒ यक्ष्यः॑ | म॒न्द्रो यजि॑ष्ठो अध्व॒रेष्वीड्यो॒ विप्रे॑भिः शुक्र॒ मन्म॑भिः ||

ágne kavír vedhā́ asi hótā pāvaka yákṣyaḥ mandró yájiṣṭho adhvaréṣv ī́ḍyo víprebhiḥ śukra mánmabhiḥ

Agni, you are a poet, an organizer, the priest, and the purifier. You are joyous, the most worshipful, to be praised in sacrifices, and brilliant with the sages' hymns.

Stanza 8.60.4

अद्रो॑घ॒मा व॑होश॒तो य॑विष्ठ्य दे॒वाँ अ॑जस्र वी॒तये॑ | अ॒भि प्रयां॑सि॒ सुधि॒ता व॑सो गहि॒ मन्द॑स्व धी॒तिभि॑र्हि॒तः ||

ádrogham ā́ vahośató yaviṣṭhya devā́m̐ ajasra vītáye abhí práyāṁsi súdhitā́ vaso gahi mándasva dhītíbhir hitáḥ

O eternal and most youthful Agni, bring the desirous gods to the feast. Come, O Vasu, to the well-prepared offerings; rejoice with our hymns.

Stanza 8.60.5

त्वमित्स॒प्रथा॑ अ॒स्यग्ने॑ त्रातर्ऋ॒तस्क॒विः | त्वां विप्रा॑सः समिधान दीदिव॒ आ वि॑वासन्ति वे॒धसः॑ ||

tvám ít sapráthā asy ágne trātar r̥tás kavíḥ tvā́ṁ víprāsaḥ samidhāna dīdiva ā́ vivāsanti vedhásaḥ

You are indeed famous everywhere, O Agni, protector, righteous, and wise. The wise ones, O radiant Agni, the organizers, worship you.

Stanza 8.60.6

शोचा॑ शोचिष्ठ दीदि॒हि वि॒शे मयो॒ रास्व॑ स्तो॒त्रे म॒हाँ अ॑सि | दे॒वानां॒ शर्म॒न्मम॑ सन्तु सू॒रयः॑ शत्रू॒षाहः॑ स्व॒ग्नयः॑ ||

śócā śociṣṭha dīdihí viśé máyo rā́sva stotré mahā́m̐ asi devā́nāṁ śárman máma santu sūráyaḥ śatrūṣā́haḥ svagnáyaḥ

Shine, most brilliant one! Blaze forth! Grant bliss to the people and to the singer. You are great. May my singers, who conquer foes and possess good fires, be in the gods' protection.

Stanza 8.60.7

यथा॑ चिद्वृ॒द्धम॑त॒समग्ने॑ सं॒जूर्व॑सि॒ क्षमि॑ | ए॒वा द॑ह मित्रमहो॒ यो अ॑स्म॒ध्रुग्दु॒र्मन्मा॒ कश्च॒ वेन॑ति ||

yáthā cid vr̥ddhám atasám ágne saṁjū́rvasi kṣámi evā́ daha mitramaho yó asmadhrúg durmánmā káś ca vénati

Just as fire burns down the grown forest, so, O Mitra-like Agni, burn him who harms us and plots evil, whoever he may be.

Stanza 8.60.8

मा नो॒ मर्ता॑य रि॒पवे॑ रक्ष॒स्विने॒ माघशं॑साय रीरधः | अस्रे॑धद्भिस्त॒रणि॑भिर्यविष्ठ्य शि॒वेभिः॑ पाहि पा॒युभिः॑ ||

mā́ no mártāya ripáve rakṣasvíne mā́gháśaṁsāya rīradhaḥ ásredhadbhis taráṇibhir yaviṣṭhya śivébhiḥ pāhi pāyúbhiḥ

Agni, do not give us to a mortal enemy or a wicked foe. O most youthful one, protect us with your conquering, unassailable, and auspicious guardians.

Stanza 8.60.9

पा॒हि नो॑ अग्न॒ एक॑या पा॒ह्यु१॒॑त द्वि॒तीय॑या | पा॒हि गी॒र्भिस्ति॒सृभि॑रूर्जां पते पा॒हि च॑त॒सृभि॑र्वसो ||

pāhí no agna ékayā pāhy ùtá dvitī́yayā pāhí gīrbhís tisŕ̥bhir ūrjām pate pāhí catasŕ̥bhir vaso

Agni, protect us with the first, protect us with the second. Protect us with the three, O Lord of Power, and with the four, O Vasu.

Stanza 8.60.10

पा॒हि विश्व॑स्माद्र॒क्षसो॒ अरा॑व्णः॒ प्र स्म॒ वाजे॑षु नोऽव | त्वामिद्धि नेदि॑ष्ठं दे॒वता॑तय आ॒पिं नक्षा॑महे वृ॒धे ||

pāhí víśvasmād rakṣáso árāvṇaḥ prá sma vā́jeṣu no 'va tvā́m íd dhí nédiṣṭhaṁ devátātaya āpíṁ nákṣāmahe vr̥dhé

Protect us from every fiend and the ungenerous. Help us in great deeds. We consider you the closest kinsman for our growth and divine help.

Stanza 8.60.11

आ नो॑ अग्ने वयो॒वृधं॑ र॒यिं पा॑वक॒ शंस्य॑म् | रास्वा॑ च न उपमाते पुरु॒स्पृहं॒ सुनी॑ती॒ स्वय॑शस्तरम् ||

ā́ no agne vayovŕ̥dhaṁ rayím pāvaka śáṁsyam rā́svā ca na upamāte puruspŕ̥haṁ súnītī sváyaśastaram

Agni, purifier, give us wealth that strengthens life and is renowned. And, O helper, grant us the greatly desired, best guided, and most glorious.

Stanza 8.60.12

येन॒ वंसा॑म॒ पृत॑नासु॒ शर्ध॑त॒स्तर॑न्तो अ॒र्य आ॒दिशः॑ | स त्वं नो॑ वर्ध॒ प्रय॑सा शचीवसो॒ जिन्वा॒ धियो॑ वसु॒विदः॑ ||

yéna váṁsāma pŕ̥tanāsu śárdhatas táranto aryá ādíśaḥ sá tváṁ no vardha práyasā śacīvaso jínvā dhíyo vasuvídaḥ

By which we may overcome rivals in battles and conquer the enemy's plans. So, O excellent one, grow us with food and quicken our thoughts that find wealth.

Stanza 8.60.13

शिशा॑नो वृष॒भो य॑था॒ग्निः शृङ्गे॒ दवि॑ध्वत् | ति॒ग्मा अ॑स्य॒ हन॑वो॒ न प्र॑ति॒धृषे॑ सु॒जम्भः॒ सह॑सो य॒हुः ||

śíśāno vr̥ṣabhó yathāgníḥ śŕ̥ṅge dávidhvat tigmā́ asya hánavo ná pratidhŕ̥ṣe sujámbhaḥ sáhaso yahúḥ

Just like a bull whetting its horns, Agni (is) formidable. Sharp are his jaws, which cannot be resisted; he is the powerful child of strength.

Stanza 8.60.14

न॒हि ते॑ अग्ने वृषभ प्रति॒धृषे॒ जम्भा॑सो॒ यद्वि॒तिष्ठ॑से | स त्वं नो॑ होतः॒ सुहु॑तं ह॒विष्कृ॑धि॒ वंस्वा॑ नो॒ वार्या॑ पु॒रु ||

nahí te agne vr̥ṣabha pratidhŕ̥ṣe jámbhāso yád vitíṣṭhase sá tváṁ no hotaḥ súhutaṁ havíṣ kr̥dhi váṁsvā no vā́ryā purú

O bull Agni, your jaws cannot be resisted when you are active. Therefore, O priest, make our offerings well-offered and grant us abundant desirable things.

Stanza 8.60.15

शेषे॒ वने॑षु मा॒त्रोः सं त्वा॒ मर्ता॑स इन्धते | अत॑न्द्रो ह॒व्या व॑हसि हवि॒ष्कृत॒ आदिद्दे॒वेषु॑ राजसि ||

śéṣe váneṣu māt!róḥ sáṁ tvā mártāsa indhate átandro havyā́ vahasi haviṣkŕ̥ta ā́d íd devéṣu rājasi

You rest in the woods; mortals kindle you from the mothers. Unweariedly you carry offerings for the offerer, and then you shine among the gods.

Stanza 8.60.16

स॒प्त होता॑र॒स्तमिदी॑ळते॒ त्वाग्ने॑ सु॒त्यज॒मह्र॑यम् | भि॒नत्स्यद्रिं॒ तप॑सा॒ वि शो॒चिषा॒ प्राग्ने॑ तिष्ठ॒ जनाँ॒ अति॑ ||

saptá hótāras tám íd īḷate tvā́gne sutyájam áhrayam bhinátsy ádriṁ tápasā ví śocíṣā prā́gne tiṣṭha jánām̐ áti

The seven priests worship you, O Agni, free-giver, everlasting one. You split the rock with heat and brilliance. Rise above the people, O Agni.

Stanza 8.60.17

अ॒ग्निम॑ग्निं वो॒ अध्रि॑गुं हु॒वेम॑ वृ॒क्तब॑र्हिषः | अ॒ग्निं हि॒तप्र॑यसः शश्व॒तीष्वा होता॑रं चर्षणी॒नाम् ||

agním-agniṁ vo ádhriguṁ huvéma vr̥ktábarhiṣaḥ agníṁ hitáprayasaḥ śaśvatī́ṣv ā́ hótāraṁ carṣaṇīnā́m

For you, O those with trimmed grass, let us call Agni, Agni, the restless one. Let us call the priest of all people, Agni, with fixed offerings, many times.

Stanza 8.60.18

केते॑न॒ शर्म॑न्त्सचते सुषा॒मण्यग्ने॒ तुभ्यं॑ चिकि॒त्वना॑ | इ॒ष॒ण्यया॑ नः पुरु॒रूप॒मा भ॑र॒ वाजं॒ नेदि॑ष्ठमू॒तये॑ ||

kétena śárman sacate suṣāmáṇy ágne túbhyaṁ cikitvánā iṣaṇyáyā naḥ pururū́pam ā́ bhara vā́jaṁ nédiṣṭham ūtáye

Agni, with a noble psalm and wish, he dwells, thinking of you who guard him. Bring us strength of many forms, O Agni, nearest for our succor.

Stanza 8.60.19

अग्ने॒ जरि॑तर्वि॒श्पति॑स्तेपा॒नो दे॑व र॒क्षसः॑ | अप्रो॑षिवान्गृ॒हप॑तिर्म॒हाँ अ॑सि दि॒वस्पा॒युर्दु॑रोण॒युः ||

ágne járitar viśpátis tepānó deva rakṣásaḥ áproṣivān gr̥hápatir mahā́m̐ asi divás pāyúr duroṇayúḥ

Agni, praise-singer, lord of men, O God, you are the mighty household lord, burning up demons, a guardian from the sky, and a home-friend.

Stanza 8.60.20

मा नो॒ रक्ष॒ आ वे॑शीदाघृणीवसो॒ मा या॒तुर्या॑तु॒माव॑ताम् | प॒रो॒ग॒व्यू॒त्यनि॑रा॒मप॒ क्षुध॒मग्ने॒ सेध॑ रक्ष॒स्विनः॑ ||

mā́ no rákṣa ā́ veśīd āghr̥ṇīvaso mā́ yātúr yātumā́vatām parogavyūty ánirām ápa kṣúdham ágne sédha rakṣasvínaḥ

O radiant Agni, do not let the demon enter our dwelling, nor the sorcerer. Drive hunger to distant pastures, and chase away the demon's allies.
