Stanza 1.39.1

प्र यदि॒त्था प॑रा॒वतः॑ शो॒चिर्न मान॒मस्य॑थ | कस्य॒ क्रत्वा॑ मरुतः॒ कस्य॒ वर्प॑सा॒ कं या॑थ॒ कं ह॑ धूतयः ||

prá yád itthā́ parāvátaḥ śocír ná mā́nam ásyatha kásya krátvā marutaḥ kásya várpasā káṁ yātha káṁ ha dhūtayaḥ

Hey Maruts, you're blazing like fire, coming from so far away! Tell me, by whose intellect and power are you traveling like this? Where are you headed, you powerful storm-shakers?

Stanza 1.39.2

स्थि॒रा वः॑ स॒न्त्वायु॑धा परा॒णुदे॑ वी॒ळू उ॒त प्र॑ति॒ष्कभे॑ | यु॒ष्माक॑मस्तु॒ तवि॑षी॒ पनी॑यसी॒ मा मर्त्य॑स्य मा॒यिनः॑ ||

sthirā́ vaḥ santv ā́yudhā parāṇúde vīḷū́ utá pratiṣkábhe yuṣmā́kam astu táviṣī pánīyasī mā́ mártyasya māyínaḥ

May your weapons be strong to strike down enemies and firm to resist. May your power be truly glorious, not like the deceptive strength of humans.

Stanza 1.39.3

परा॑ ह॒ यत्स्थि॒रं ह॒थ नरो॑ व॒र्तय॑था गु॒रु | वि या॑थन व॒निनः॑ पृथि॒व्या व्याशाः॒ पर्व॑तानाम् ||

párā ha yát sthiráṁ hathá náro vartáyathā gurú ví yāthana vanínaḥ pr̥thivyā́ vy ā́śāḥ párvatānām

O heroes, when you strike down the firm and move the heavy things, you can easily pass through the trees of the earth and the clefts in the mountains.

Stanza 1.39.4

न॒हि वः॒ शत्रु॑र्विवि॒दे अधि॒ द्यवि॒ न भूम्यां॑ रिशादसः | यु॒ष्माक॑मस्तु॒ तवि॑षी॒ तना॑ यु॒जा रुद्रा॑सो॒ नू चि॑दा॒धृषे॑ ||

nahí vaḥ śátrur vividé ádhi dyávi ná bhū́myāṁ riśādasaḥ yuṣmā́kam astu táviṣī tánā yujā́ rúdrāso nū́ cid ādhŕ̥ṣe

No enemy can be found against you, O destroyers of foes, neither in the sky nor on the earth! May your strength be with you, and your power, O Rudras, be something no one can dare to challenge.

Stanza 1.39.5

प्र वे॑पयन्ति॒ पर्व॑ता॒न्वि वि॑ञ्चन्ति॒ वन॒स्पती॑न् | प्रो आ॑रत मरुतो दु॒र्मदा॑ इव॒ देवा॑सः॒ सर्व॑या वि॒शा ||

prá vepayanti párvatān ví viñcanti vánaspátīn pró ārata maruto durmádā iva dévāsaḥ sárvayā viśā́

You make the mountains tremble and tear apart the trees of the forest. Come on, Maruts, like wild revelers, Gods, with your whole troop!

Stanza 1.39.6

उपो॒ रथे॑षु॒ पृष॑तीरयुग्ध्वं॒ प्रष्टि॑र्वहति॒ रोहि॑तः | आ वो॒ यामा॑य पृथि॒वी चि॑दश्रो॒दबी॑भयन्त॒ मानु॑षाः ||

úpo rátheṣu pŕ̥ṣatīr ayugdhvam práṣṭir vahati róhitaḥ ā́ vo yā́māya pr̥thivī́ cid aśrod ábībhayanta mā́nuṣāḥ

You've harnessed the spotted deer to your chariots, with a red one leading the way. Even the Earth listened when you approached, and humans were filled with fear.

Stanza 1.39.7

आ वो॑ म॒क्षू तना॑य॒ कं रुद्रा॒ अवो॑ वृणीमहे | गन्ता॑ नू॒नं नोऽव॑सा॒ यथा॑ पु॒रेत्था कण्वा॑य बि॒भ्युषे॑ ||

ā́ vo makṣū́ tánāya káṁ rúdrā ávo vr̥ṇīmahe gántā nūnáṁ nó 'vasā yáthā purétthā́ káṇvāya bibhyúṣe

O Rudras, we quickly ask for your help for our endeavor. Come now with your aid, just as you did before, to help the frightened Kanva!

Stanza 1.39.8

यु॒ष्मेषि॑तो मरुतो॒ मर्त्ये॑षित॒ आ यो नो॒ अभ्व॒ ईष॑ते | वि तं यु॑योत॒ शव॑सा॒ व्योज॑सा॒ वि यु॒ष्माका॑भिरू॒तिभिः॑ ||

yuṣméṣito maruto mártyeṣita ā́ yó no ábhva ī́ṣate ví táṁ yuyota śávasā vy ójasā ví yuṣmā́kābhir ūtíbhiḥ

O Maruts, if any powerful enemy, incited by you or by mortals, attacks us, separate him from us with your power, your strength, and your succor!

Stanza 1.39.9

असा॑मि॒ हि प्र॑यज्यवः॒ कण्वं॑ द॒द प्र॑चेतसः | असा॑मिभिर्मरुत॒ आ न॑ ऊ॒तिभि॒र्गन्ता॑ वृ॒ष्टिं न वि॒द्युतः॑ ||

ásāmi hí prayajyavaḥ káṇvaṁ dadá pracetasaḥ ásāmibhir maruta ā́ na ūtíbhir gántā vr̥ṣṭíṁ ná vidyútaḥ

For you, O worshipful and wise Maruts, have fully protected Kanva. Come to us, O Maruts, with your complete aid, just as lightning comes seeking the rain!

Stanza 1.39.10

असा॒म्योजो॑ बिभृथा सुदान॒वोऽसा॑मि धूतयः॒ शवः॑ | ऋ॒षि॒द्विषे॑ मरुतः परिम॒न्यव॒ इषुं॒ न सृ॑जत॒ द्विष॑म् ||

ásāmy ójo bibhr̥thā sudānavó 'sāmi dhūtayaḥ śávaḥ r̥ṣidvíṣe marutaḥ parimanyáva íṣuṁ ná sr̥jata dvíṣam

O good givers, you possess complete strength and power, you shakers! O Maruts, send an enemy, like an arrow, against the one who opposes the poets and is wrathful!
