I believe Agni is the generous priest, the wealth-giver, son of strength, the knower of all beings, the enlightened one, like a wise poet. He, the god of glorious rites, with his bright form reaching upwards towards the gods, desires the shining ghee and clarified butter that is offered.
This verse is a prayer to Agni, the fire god, recognizing him as the divine priest (hotar) and bestower of wealth. The speaker acknowledges Agni's role in the sacrifice, his knowledge, and his radiant presence. The focus is on Agni's connection to the gods and his sustenance from the offerings.

Indeed, shining with mighty strength, he becomes the vanquisher of deceitful foes, like an axe that conquers deceit. At his approach, even strong things melt away, and stable things yield like trees. He conquers and stands firm, unyielding; like an expert archer, he does not retreat.
Agni's immense power is highlighted as he destroys wicked forces. His presence causes even solid things to tremble, and his might is compared to a sharp axe cutting down obstacles. The verse emphasizes his unwavering strength and ability to overcome any resistance.

Even firm things give way to him, as is known. With the hottest fire-sticks, he powerfully provides for his own welfare. He who penetrates many things, shaping them like wood with his brilliance, destroys even solid food with his might—he destroys even what is firm with his might.
This verse describes Agni's power to break through obstacles. Even solid things yield to him. He is compared to wood being carved by skilled hands, and his intensity is such that he consumes even firm food. The verse emphasizes Agni's transformative and powerful nature in consuming offerings.

Let us place his power among us; he is more visible at night than by day, and stronger than by day for the ceaseless worshipper. His life is a firm refuge, like a father's to his son. The eternal fires accept what is offered and what is not offered; they accept it as sustenance.
This verse highlights Agni's dual nature: he is more visible and powerful at night than during the day, offering protection like a father to his children. The verse speaks of fires that are eternal, sustaining both given and unreceived offerings, symbolizing their continuous presence and beneficial nature.

He indeed makes a mighty roar like the host of the Maruts, adored in fertile lands and in desolate places. He, the seizer, accepted the offerings; he has deservedly become the banner of the sacrifice. And when he joyously proceeds, all gladly follow his path; men follow his path to prosperity.
This verse praises Agni's powerful, roaring presence, comparing him to the Maruts (storm gods). He is described as adored in both fertile lands and desolate places. Agni is recognized as the symbol of sacrifice, accepting offerings and leading the way for humans who follow him with joy.
