यु॒क्ष्वा हि दे॑व॒हूत॑माँ॒ अश्वाँ॑ अग्ने र॒थीरि॑व | नि होता॑ पू॒र्व्यः स॑दः ||
yukṣvā́ hí devahū́tamām̐ áśvām̐ agne rathī́r iva ní hótā pūrvyáḥ sadaḥ
Harness your steeds, O Agni, most inviting to the gods, as a charioteer would. You, the ancient priest, seat yourself in the assembly.
The worshipper implores Agni, the divine priest (Hotar), to harness his swift steeds, like a charioteer, to draw the attention of the gods. Agni is asked to take his place in the divine assembly, ready to perform his priestly duties.

The devotee requests Agni to act as an intermediary, to speak to the gods on behalf of the humans. He asks Agni, who possesses the greatest knowledge, to convey their prayers and desires, and to ensure that all their wishes are fulfilled.

You, O Most Young one, O Son of Strength, O invoked one, you exist as the truthful and worthy of worship.
Addressing Agni directly, the worshipper acknowledges his supreme youthfulness (Yavishtha) and his sonship to strength (Sahas). He recognizes Agni as the one to whom sacrifices are offered, and affirms that Agni is the embodiment of truth and order (Ritam), and is worthy of worship.

The worshipper asks Agni to be pleased and to approach their sacrifice, comparing Agni's response to the way the skilled craftsmen (Rbhava) shape the fellies (nemi) of a wheel. They invoke Agni by his name Angiras, urging him to come close to their sacred rite.

The devotee prays that the divine powers or companies (visah) of the gods should not abandon them. They compare such abandonment to the way the dawn (usrah) fades away or like cows that leave their calves, implying a fear of being left vulnerable and unprotected.

The devotee pleads with Agni not to cast them aside in this great battle (mahādhane) as if they were mere burden-bearers. Instead, they ask Agni to help them decisively win and gather (sam-vargam sam jay) all the spoils and wealth.

The devotee prays to Agni that any misfortune or plague (ducchuna) should pursue and afflict someone else, not them. They ask Agni to strengthen their own power (amavachchavah) and make it grow.
