prá śárdhāya mā́rutāya svábhānava imā́ṁ vā́cam anajā parvatacyúte gharmastúbhe divá ā́ pr̥ṣṭhayájvane dyumnáśravase máhi nr̥mṇám arcata

I offer this prayer to the brilliant Maruts, who shake the mountains. Let us praise their great strength and renown, who sustain the heat, and worship in the heavens.

Stanza 5.54.2

prá vo marutas taviṣā́ udanyávo vayovŕ̥dho aśvayújaḥ párijrayaḥ sáṁ vidyútā dádhati vā́śati tritáḥ sváranty ā́po 'vánā párijrayaḥ

O Maruts, your powerful warriors, who bring water and invigorate life, harness their horses and surround. When you aim the lightning, Trita shouts, and the waters roar, flowing along their course.

Stanza 5.54.3

vidyúnmahaso náro áśmadidyavo vā́tatviṣo marútaḥ parvatacyútaḥ abdayā́ cin múhur ā́ hrādunīvŕ̥ta stanáyadamā rabhasā́ údojasaḥ

These Maruts are powerful men, radiant with lightning, and swift like the wind, shaking the mountains. They suddenly whirl with hail when desiring to send rain; they have thundering strength and are robust.

Stanza 5.54.4

O Rudras, O powerful ones, drive away the nights, the days, the sky, and the atmospheric regions. You move across the plains like ships, and O Maruts, you do not perish even when entering strongholds.

Stanza 5.54.5

tád vīryàṁ vo maruto mahitvanáṁ dīrgháṁ tatāna sū́ryo ná yójanam étā ná yā́me ágr̥bhītaśociṣó 'naśvadāṁ yán ny áyātanā girím

O Maruts, that strength and greatness of yours extends far like the sun's course. You moved with unhindered brilliance, like deer, and bowed down the mountain.

Stanza 5.54.6

ábhrāji śárdho maruto yád arṇasám móṣathā vr̥kṣáṁ kapanéva vedhasaḥ ádha smā no arámatiṁ sajoṣasaś cákṣur iva yántam ánu neṣathā sugám

Your host, O Maruts, shone brightly when you, O sages, stripped the waving tree like a worm. Therefore, O friends, guide our devotion to a good end, as the eye guides one walking.

Stanza 5.54.7

ná sá jīyate maruto ná hanyate ná sredhati ná vyathate ná riṣyati nā́sya rā́ya úpa dasyanti nótáya ŕ̥ṣiṁ vā yáṁ rā́jānaṁ vā súṣūdatha

O Maruts, that man is not defeated, not killed, does not fail, does not tremble, does not suffer harm. His wealth and protections do not perish, whom you direct, whether seer or king.

Stanza 5.54.8

O Maruts, like warriors conquering clans, and like Aryaman, you carry waterskins and fill the spring. When you strong ones roar, you moisten the earth with sweet liquid.

Stanza 5.54.9

pravátvatīyám pr̥thivī́ marúdbhyaḥ pravátvatī dyaúr bhavati prayádbhyaḥ pravátvatīḥ pathyāā̀ antárikṣyāḥ pravátvantaḥ párvatā jīrádānavaḥ

This earth bows for the Maruts, the heaven bows for the approaching ones. The paths of the sky and the swift-giving mountains bow.

Stanza 5.54.10

yán marutaḥ sabharasaḥ svarṇaraḥ sū́rya údite mádathā divo naraḥ ná vó 'śvāḥ śrathayantā́ha sísrataḥ sadyó asyā́dhvanaḥ pārám aśnutha

When you rejoice at sunrise, O Maruts, companions and heroes of the sky, your horses do not tire in running, and you quickly reach the end of your journey.

Stanza 5.54.11

Spears are on your shoulders, anklets on your feet, golden chains on your chests, O Maruts, gems on your chariot. Bright lightnings in your fists, and golden bands tied on your heads.

Stanza 5.54.12

O Maruts, you shake the shining apple from the sky, whose splendour cannot be touched by the enemy. The hamlets bowed when you flashed, and the pious ones sounded their far-reaching cry.

Stanza 5.54.13

yuṣmā́dattasya maruto vicetaso rāyáḥ syāma rathyò váyasvataḥ ná yó yúchati tiṣyò yáthā divò 'smé rāranta marutaḥ sahasríṇam

O wise Maruts, let us have the wealth you bestowed, associated with chariots and life. Give us, O Maruts, the thousandfold wealth that does not fail, like Tisya from the sky.

Stanza 5.54.14

O Maruts, you protect the wealth of brave men, and the seer skilled in hymns. You give to Bharata a swift horse and strength, and you establish an obedient king.

Stanza 5.54.15

O you who are swiftly ready to help, I seek your wealth, by which we may spread among men like the sun. O Maruts, accept this my pleasing word, by whose power we may cross a hundred winters.
