Stanza 3.1.1

सोम॑स्य मा त॒वसं॒ वक्ष्य॑ग्ने॒ वह्निं॑ चकर्थ वि॒दथे॒ यज॑ध्यै | दे॒वाँ अच्छा॒ दीद्य॑द्यु॒ञ्जे अद्रिं॑ शमा॒ये अ॑ग्ने त॒न्वं॑ जुषस्व ||

sómasya mā tavásaṁ vákṣy agne váhniṁ cakartha vidáthe yájadhyai devā́m̐ áchā dī́dyad yuñjé ádriṁ śamāyé agne tanvàṁ juṣasva

Oh Agni, you desire my strength! You've made me the priest of Soma, ready to worship in this gathering. You shine towards the gods, and I've set up the pressing stones. I'm working hard; please, Agni, find joy in yourself!

Stanza 3.1.2

प्राञ्चं॑ य॒ज्ञं च॑कृम॒ वर्ध॑तां॒ गीः स॒मिद्भि॑र॒ग्निं नम॑सा दुवस्यन् | दि॒वः श॑शासुर्वि॒दथा॑ कवी॒नां गृत्सा॑य चित्त॒वसे॑ गा॒तुमी॑षुः ||

prā́ñcaṁ yajñáṁ cakr̥ma várdhatāṁ gī́ḥ samídbhir agníṁ námasā duvasyan diváḥ śaśāsur vidáthā kavīnā́ṁ gŕ̥tsāya cit taváse gātúm īṣuḥ

We've set our sacrifice facing east; may our prayers grow stronger! We honor Agni with fuel and devotion. The wise ones in heaven taught us the rituals. We're trying to find a path for him, for the clever and strong Agni!

Stanza 3.1.3

मयो॑ दधे॒ मेधि॑रः पू॒तद॑क्षो दि॒वः सु॒बन्धु॑र्ज॒नुषा॑ पृथि॒व्याः | अवि॑न्दन्नु दर्श॒तम॒प्स्व१॒॑न्तर्दे॒वासो॑ अ॒ग्निम॒पसि॒ स्वसॄ॑णाम् ||

máyo dadhe médhiraḥ pūtádakṣo diváḥ subándhur janúṣā pr̥thivyā́ḥ ávindann u darśatám apsv àntár devā́so agním apási svásr̥r̥ṇām

He, the wise one with pure powers, brought well-being. His birth is well-connected to Heaven and Earth. The gods found Agni, the brilliant one, in the waters, through the work of the sisters.

Stanza 3.1.4

अव॑र्धयन्त्सु॒भगं॑ स॒प्त य॒ह्वीः श्वे॒तं ज॑ज्ञा॒नम॑रु॒षं म॑हि॒त्वा | शिशुं॒ न जा॒तम॒भ्या॑रु॒रश्वा॑ दे॒वासो॑ अ॒ग्निं जनि॑मन्वपुष्यन् ||

ávardhayan subhágaṁ saptá yahvī́ḥ śvetáṁ jajñānám aruṣám mahitvā́ śíśuṁ ná jātám abhy āā̀rur áśvā devā́so agníṁ jániman vapuṣyan

The seven powerful streams nourished the beloved one, who was born white and grew reddish with his greatness. Like mares rushing to their newborn foal, the gods approached Agni at his birth, marveling.

Stanza 3.1.5

शु॒क्रेभि॒रङ्गै॒ रज॑ आतत॒न्वान्क्रतुं॑ पुना॒नः क॒विभिः॑ प॒वित्रैः॑ | शो॒चिर्वसा॑नः॒ पर्यायु॑र॒पां श्रियो॑ मिमीते बृह॒तीरनू॑नाः ||

śukrébhir áṅgai rája ātatanvā́n krátum punānáḥ kavíbhiḥ pavítraiḥ śocír vásānaḥ páry ā́yur apā́ṁ śríyo mimīte br̥hatī́r ánūnāḥ

With his shining limbs, Agni spreads through the atmosphere. He purifies his power with wise filters, wearing light. He is the life of the waters, creating boundless, perfect glories.

Stanza 3.1.6

व॒व्राजा॑ सी॒मन॑दती॒रद॑ब्धा दि॒वो य॒ह्वीरव॑साना॒ अन॑ग्नाः | सना॒ अत्र॑ युव॒तयः॒ सयो॑नी॒रेकं॒ गर्भं॑ दधिरे स॒प्त वाणीः॑ ||

vavrā́jā sīm ánadatīr ádabdhā divó yahvī́r ávasānā ánagnāḥ sánā átra yuvatáyaḥ sáyonīr ékaṁ gárbhaṁ dadhire saptá vā́ṇīḥ

He went to the mighty, undecaying heavenly beings. Here, the ancient and young sisters, sharing the same origin, conceived him as one germ – they were neither clothed nor naked.

Stanza 3.1.7

स्ती॒र्णा अ॑स्य सं॒हतो॑ वि॒श्वरू॑पा घृ॒तस्य॒ योनौ॑ स्र॒वथे॒ मधू॑नाम् | अस्थु॒रत्र॑ धे॒नवः॒ पिन्व॑माना म॒ही द॒स्मस्य॑ मा॒तरा॑ समी॒ची ||

stīrṇā́ asya saṁháto viśvárūpā ghr̥tásya yónau sraváthe mádhūnām ásthur átra dhenávaḥ pínvamānā mahī́ dasmásya mātárā samīcī́

His spread-out, multi-formed essence rests where pure ghee flows and sweet waters stream. The nourishing cows are here, along with the two great mothers who support him.

Stanza 3.1.8

ब॒भ्रा॒णः सू॑नो सहसो॒ व्य॑द्यौ॒द्दधा॑नः शु॒क्रा र॑भ॒सा वपूं॑षि | श्चोत॑न्ति॒ धारा॒ मधु॑नो घृ॒तस्य॒ वृषा॒ यत्र॑ वावृ॒धे काव्ये॑न ||

babhrāṇáḥ sūno sahaso vy àdyaud dádhānaḥ śukrā́ rabhasā́ vápūṁṣi ścótanti dhā́rā mádhuno ghr̥tásya vŕ̥ṣā yátra vāvr̥dhé kā́vyena

Carried along (by the waters), O son of strength, you shone, taking on brilliant and powerful forms. Streams of honey and ghee drip where the potent one grew strong through wisdom.

Stanza 3.1.9

पि॒तुश्चि॒दूध॑र्ज॒नुषा॑ विवेद॒ व्य॑स्य॒ धारा॑ असृज॒द्वि धेनाः॑ | गुहा॒ चर॑न्तं॒ सखि॑भिः शि॒वेभि॑र्दि॒वो य॒ह्वीभि॒र्न गुहा॑ बभूव ||

pitúś cid ū́dhar janúṣā viveda vy àsya dhā́rā asr̥jad ví dhénāḥ gúhā cárantaṁ sákhibhiḥ śivébhir divó yahvī́bhir ná gúhā babhūva

From birth, he understood even his father's source. He released his flowing sounds and energies. Moving secretly with his dear friends, he was not hidden from the young celestial beings.

Stanza 3.1.10

पि॒तुश्च॒ गर्भं॑ जनि॒तुश्च॑ बभ्रे पू॒र्वीरेको॑ अधय॒त्पीप्या॑नाः | वृष्णे॑ स॒पत्नी॒ शुच॑ये॒ सब॑न्धू उ॒भे अ॑स्मै मनु॒ष्ये॒३॒॑ नि पा॑हि ||

pitúś ca gárbhaṁ janitúś ca babhre pūrvī́r éko adhayat pī́pyānāḥ vŕ̥ṣṇe sapátnī śúcaye sábandhū ubhé asmai manuṣyè ní pāhi

He bore the germ of the sire and the maker. He alone drew from many rich (sources). Protect, for the strong and bright one, the two wives bound by kinship, associated with men.

Stanza 3.1.11

उ॒रौ म॒हाँ अ॑निबा॒धे व॑व॒र्धापो॑ अ॒ग्निं य॒शसः॒ सं हि पू॒र्वीः | ऋ॒तस्य॒ योना॑वशय॒द्दमू॑ना जामी॒नाम॒ग्निर॒पसि॒ स्वसॄ॑णाम् ||

uraú mahā́m̐ anibādhé vavardhā́po agníṁ yaśásaḥ sáṁ hí pūrvī́ḥ r̥tásya yónāv aśayad dámūnā jāmīnā́m agnír apási svásr̥r̥ṇām

The great one grew in a wide, boundless space. The waters, full of glory, strengthened Agni. The domestic Agni lay in the lap of Order, in the service of the sister rivers.

Stanza 3.1.12

अ॒क्रो न ब॒भ्रिः स॑मि॒थे म॒हीनां॑ दिदृ॒क्षेयः॑ सू॒नवे॒ भाऋ॑जीकः | उदु॒स्रिया॒ जनि॑ता॒ यो ज॒जाना॒पां गर्भो॒ नृत॑मो य॒ह्वो अ॒ग्निः ||

akró ná babhríḥ samithé mahī́nāṁ didr̥kṣéyaḥ sūnáve bhā́r̥jīkaḥ úd usríyā jánitā yó jajā́nāpā́ṁ gárbho nŕ̥tamo yahvó agníḥ

Like a spirited horse in the assembly of the great waters, Agni, visible to his offspring, shines. He is the father who begat the dawn lights and their son. This most manly, restless Agni is the child of the waters.

Stanza 3.1.13

अ॒पां गर्भं॑ दर्श॒तमोष॑धीनां॒ वना॑ जजान सु॒भगा॒ विरू॑पम् | दे॒वास॑श्चि॒न्मन॑सा॒ सं हि ज॒ग्मुः पनि॑ष्ठं जा॒तं त॒वसं॑ दुवस्यन् ||

apā́ṁ gárbhaṁ darśatám óṣadhīnāṁ vánā jajāna subhágā vírūpam devā́saś cin mánasā sáṁ hí jagmúḥ pániṣṭhaṁ jātáṁ tavásaṁ duvasyan

The blessed wood gave birth to the child of the waters and plants, the most wonderful, in his varied forms. The gods, agreeing in mind, came together and honored the born one, the powerful and wondrous.

Stanza 3.1.14

बृ॒हन्त॒ इद्भा॒नवो॒ भाऋ॑जीकम॒ग्निं स॑चन्त वि॒द्युतो॒ न शु॒क्राः | गुहे॑व वृ॒द्धं सद॑सि॒ स्वे अ॒न्तर॑पा॒र ऊ॒र्वे अ॒मृतं॒ दुहा॑नाः ||

br̥hánta íd bhānávo bhā́r̥jīkam agníṁ sacanta vidyúto ná śukrā́ḥ gúheva vr̥ddháṁ sádasi své antár apārá ūrvé amŕ̥taṁ dúhānāḥ

Great, shining lights, like lightning, accompany Agni, the light-diffuser, who has grown in his own house. While he stays in his secret place, they, in the boundless stable, milk out immortality.

Stanza 3.1.15

ईळे॑ च त्वा॒ यज॑मानो ह॒विर्भि॒रीळे॑ सखि॒त्वं सु॑म॒तिं निका॑मः | दे॒वैरवो॑ मिमीहि॒ सं ज॑रि॒त्रे रक्षा॑ च नो॒ दम्ये॑भि॒रनी॑कैः ||

ī́ḷe ca tvā yájamāno havírbhir ī́ḷe sakhitváṁ sumatíṁ níkāmaḥ devaír ávo mimīhi sáṁ jaritré rákṣā ca no dámyebhir ánīkaiḥ

I praise you, Agni, with offerings and desire your friendship and favor. Grant help to the singer along with the gods, and protect us with your divine presence!

Stanza 3.1.16

उ॒प॒क्षे॒तार॒स्तव॑ सुप्रणी॒तेऽग्ने॒ विश्वा॑नि॒ धन्या॒ दधा॑नाः | सु॒रेत॑सा॒ श्रव॑सा॒ तुञ्ज॑माना अ॒भि ष्या॑म पृतना॒यूँरदे॑वान् ||

upakṣetā́ras táva supraṇīté 'gne víśvāni dhányā dádhānāḥ surétasā śrávasā túñjamānā abhí ṣyāma pr̥tanāyū́m̐r ádevān

O Agni, best leader, may we, your followers possessing fertile glory, overcome the godless enemies in battle!

Stanza 3.1.17

आ दे॒वाना॑मभवः के॒तुर॑ग्ने म॒न्द्रो विश्वा॑नि॒ काव्या॑नि वि॒द्वान् | प्रति॒ मर्ताँ॑ अवासयो॒ दमू॑ना॒ अनु॑ दे॒वान्र॑थि॒रो या॑सि॒ साध॑न् ||

ā́ devā́nām abhavaḥ ketúr agne mandró víśvāni kā́vyāni vidvā́n práti mártām̐ avāsayo dámūnā ánu devā́n rathiró yāsi sā́dhan

Agni, you have become the banner of the gods, a joyful one knowing all wisdom. As the household protector, you have brought light to mortals. Like a charioteer, you follow the gods, achieving their aims.

Stanza 3.1.18

नि दु॑रो॒णे अ॒मृतो॒ मर्त्या॑नां॒ राजा॑ ससाद वि॒दथा॑नि॒ साध॑न् | घृ॒तप्र॑तीक उर्वि॒या व्य॑द्यौद॒ग्निर्विश्वा॑नि॒ काव्या॑नि वि॒द्वान् ||

ní duroṇé amŕ̥to mártyānāṁ rā́jā sasāda vidáthāni sā́dhan ghr̥tápratīka urviyā́ vy àdyaud agnír víśvāni kā́vyāni vidvā́n

The immortal king, Agni, has settled in the mortal's home, managing their rituals. With a ghee-covered appearance, he shone widely, Agni, knowing all wisdom.

Stanza 3.1.19

आ नो॑ गहि स॒ख्येभिः॑ शि॒वेभि॑र्म॒हान्म॒हीभि॑रू॒तिभिः॑ सर॒ण्यन् | अ॒स्मे र॒यिं ब॑हु॒लं संत॑रुत्रं सु॒वाचं॑ भा॒गं य॒शसं॑ कृधी नः ||

ā́ no gahi sakhyébhiḥ śivébhir mahā́n mahī́bhir ūtíbhiḥ saraṇyán asmé rayím bahuláṁ sáṁtarutraṁ suvā́cam bhāgáṁ yaśásaṁ kr̥dhī naḥ

Come to us with your gracious friendship and mighty help! Grant us abundant wealth that saves us, and make our share glorious with good speech!

Stanza 3.1.20

ए॒ता ते॑ अग्ने॒ जनि॑मा॒ सना॑नि॒ प्र पू॒र्व्याय॒ नूत॑नानि वोचम् | म॒हान्ति॒ वृष्णे॒ सव॑ना कृ॒तेमा जन्म॑ञ्जन्म॒न्निहि॑तो जा॒तवे॑दाः ||

etā́ te agne jánimā sánāni prá pūrvyā́ya nū́tanāni vocam mahā́nti vŕ̥ṣṇe sávanā kr̥témā́ jánmañ-janman níhito jātávedāḥ

I have told you, Agni, about your old and new births and glories. Great sacrifices have been prepared for the strong one; in every generation, Jātavedas is established.

Stanza 3.1.21

जन्म॑ञ्जन्म॒न्निहि॑तो जा॒तवे॑दा वि॒श्वामि॑त्रेभिरिध्यते॒ अज॑स्रः | तस्य॑ व॒यं सु॑म॒तौ य॒ज्ञिय॒स्यापि॑ भ॒द्रे सौ॑मन॒से स्या॑म ||

jánmañ-janman níhito jātávedā viśvā́mitrebhir idhyate ájasraḥ tásya vayáṁ sumataú yajñíyasyā́pi bhadré saumanasé syāma

Jātavedas, established generation after generation, is kindled ceaselessly by the Viśvāmitras. May we remain in the grace of the worshipful one, yes, in his blissful kindness!

Stanza 3.1.22

इ॒मं य॒ज्ञं स॑हसाव॒न्त्वं नो॑ देव॒त्रा धे॑हि सुक्रतो॒ ररा॑णः | प्र यं॑सि होतर्बृह॒तीरिषो॒ नोऽग्ने॒ महि॒ द्रवि॑ण॒मा य॑जस्व ||

imáṁ yajñáṁ sahasāvan tváṁ no devatrā́ dhehi sukrato rárāṇaḥ prá yaṁsi hotar br̥hatī́r íṣo nó 'gne máhi dráviṇam ā́ yajasva

O strong and wise one, joyfully carry this sacrifice of ours to the gods! O priest, bestow abundant food and mighty wealth upon us through sacrifice!

Stanza 3.1.23

इळा॑मग्ने पुरु॒दंसं॑ स॒निं गोः श॑श्वत्त॒मं हव॑मानाय साध | स्यान्नः॑ सू॒नुस्तन॑यो वि॒जावाग्ने॒ सा ते॑ सुम॒तिर्भू॑त्व॒स्मे ||

íḷām agne purudáṁsaṁ saníṁ góḥ śaśvattamáṁ hávamānāya sādha syā́n naḥ sūnús tánayo vijā́vā́gne sā́ te sumatír bhūtv asmé

Agni, provide for the one who calls you: nourishment, cows, and lasting success. May we have a son and continuing offspring. Agni, may your favor remain with us!
