Agni, come to our sacrifice, which is threefold, with seven threads and five parts. Be our carrier of offerings and our leader. You have rested long enough in darkness.

ádevād deváḥ pracátā gúhā yán prapáśyamāno amr̥tatvám emi śiváṁ yát sántam áśivo jáhāmi svā́t sakhyā́d áraṇīṁ nā́bhim emi

Moving from the ungodly towards divinity, I proceed secretly, perceiving immortality. Leaving behind the unholy which is associated with the ungraceful, I embrace the kinship of the divine.

Observing the guest of another lineage, I have established many aspects of cosmic order. I bid farewell to the Father and the Asura. Turning away from the unworthy, I shall embrace the worthy share of the Asura.

bahvī́ḥ sámā akaram antár asminn índraṁ vr̥ṇānáḥ pitáraṁ jahāmi agníḥ sómo váruṇas té cyavante paryā́vard rāṣṭráṁ tád avāmy āyán

I spent many years within this sacred space, choosing Indra and abandoning the Father. Agni, Soma, and Varuṇa move away. Dominion changes; I embrace that.

Those Asuras have become powerless. You, O Varuṇa, who see truth from falsehood, desire me. Come and be the ruler of my kingdom.

Here is light, here is beauty. Here is radiance and this wide space. Let us both kill Vṛtra. Enter, O Soma! You are the oblation; with offerings we shall worship you.

The wise one fixed his form in the sky by wisdom. Varuṇa released the waters without force. Like women bringing prosperity, the rivers carry his radiance.

They follow his greatest power, rejoicing in their divine nature. Like people choosing a king, they have turned away from Vṛtra, the abhorrent.

They call him the Swan, companion of the abhorrent waters, moving in friendship with celestial waters. The sages, with wisdom, recognized Indra approaching swiftly when the Anuṣṭubh verse calls him.
