Stanza 1.36.1

प्र वो॑ य॒ह्वं पु॑रू॒णां वि॒शां दे॑वय॒तीना॑म् | अ॒ग्निं सू॒क्तेभि॒र्वचो॑भिरीमहे॒ यं सी॒मिद॒न्य ईळ॑ते ||

prá vo yahvám purūṇā́ṁ viśā́ṁ devayatī́nām agníṁ sūktébhir vácobhir īmahe ̀ yáṁ sīm íd anyá ī́ḷate

We call out to you, Agni! You are the powerful guardian of many people and communities who worship the gods. We offer you praise and words of reverence. Indeed, many others also call upon you.

Stanza 1.36.2

जना॑सो अ॒ग्निं द॑धिरे सहो॒वृधं॑ ह॒विष्म॑न्तो विधेम ते | स त्वं नो॑ अ॒द्य सु॒मना॑ इ॒हावि॒ता भवा॒ वाजे॑षु सन्त्य ||

jánāso agníṁ dadhire sahovŕ̥dhaṁ ̀ havíṣmanto vidhema te sá tváṁ no adyá sumánā ihā́vitā́ ̀ bhávā vā́jeṣu santya

People have welcomed Agni as the source of their strength. We, who have offerings, want to worship you. So, Agni, be present with us today, with a good heart, as our helper in achieving success.

Stanza 1.36.3

प्र त्वा॑ दू॒तं वृ॑णीमहे॒ होता॑रं वि॒श्ववे॑दसम् | म॒हस्ते॑ स॒तो वि च॑रन्त्य॒र्चयो॑ दि॒वि स्पृ॑शन्ति भा॒नवः॑ ||

prá tvā dūtáṁ vr̥ṇīmahe hótāraṁ viśvávedasam mahás te sató ví caranty arcáyo ̀ diví spr̥śanti bhānávaḥ

We choose you, Agni, as our messenger and our priest, the one who knows all. Your mighty flames spread out far and wide, and your brilliant rays touch the sky.

Stanza 1.36.4

दे॒वास॑स्त्वा॒ वरु॑णो मि॒त्रो अ॑र्य॒मा सं दू॒तं प्र॒त्नमि॑न्धते | विश्वं॒ सो अ॑ग्ने जयति॒ त्वया॒ धनं॒ यस्ते॑ द॒दाश॒ मर्त्यः॑ ||

devā́sas tvā váruṇo mitró aryamā́ ̀ sáṁ dūtám pratnám indhate víśvaṁ só agne jayati tváyā dhánaṁ ̀ yás te dadā́śa mártyaḥ

The gods themselves—Varuna, Mitra, and Aryaman—kindle you, the eternal messenger. Agni, the mortal who honors you with offerings gains all victories and wealth through your power.

Stanza 1.36.5

म॒न्द्रो होता॑ गृ॒हप॑ति॒रग्ने॑ दू॒तो वि॒शाम॑सि | त्वे विश्वा॒ संग॑तानि व्र॒ता ध्रु॒वा यानि॑ दे॒वा अकृ॑ण्वत ||

mandró hótā gr̥hápatir ágne dūtó viśā́m asi tvé víśvā sáṁgatāni vratā́ dhruvā́ ̀ yā́ni devā́ ákr̥ṇvata

Agni, you are our delightful priest and the lord of the household, the messenger for all the people. All the firm, divine laws and agreements that the gods have established are contained within you.

Stanza 1.36.6

त्वे इद॑ग्ने सु॒भगे॑ यविष्ठ्य॒ विश्व॒मा हू॑यते ह॒विः | स त्वं नो॑ अ॒द्य सु॒मना॑ उ॒ताप॒रं यक्षि॑ दे॒वान्त्सु॒वीर्या॑ ||

tvé íd agne subháge yaviṣṭhya ̀ víśvam ā́ hūyate havíḥ sá tváṁ no adyá sumánā utā́paráṁ ̀ yákṣi devā́n suvī́ryā

O Agni, you are blessed, the youngest god, and all offerings are brought to you. Be gracious to us today and in the future, and accept our worship, so that we may have heroic descendants.

Stanza 1.36.7

तं घे॑मि॒त्था न॑म॒स्विन॒ उप॑ स्व॒राज॑मासते | होत्रा॑भिर॒ग्निं मनु॑षः॒ समि॑न्धते तिति॒र्वांसो॒ अति॒ स्रिधः॑ ||

táṁ ghem itthā́ namasvína úpa svarā́jam āsate hótrābhir agním mánuṣaḥ sám indhate ̀ titirvā́ṁso áti srídhaḥ

The reverent worshippers approach him, Agni, who is like a mighty, self-ruling king. With their prayers and sacrifices, they ignite Agni, having successfully overcome all adversaries.

Stanza 1.36.8

घ्नन्तो॑ वृ॒त्रम॑तर॒न्रोद॑सी अ॒प उ॒रु क्षया॑य चक्रिरे | भुव॒त्कण्वे॒ वृषा॑ द्यु॒म्न्याहु॑तः॒ क्रन्द॒दश्वो॒ गवि॑ष्टिषु ||

ghnánto vr̥trám ataran ródasī apá ̀ urú kṣáyāya cakrire bhúvat káṇve vŕ̥ṣā dyumny ā́hutaḥ ̀ krándad áśvo gáviṣṭiṣu

Destroying the enemy, they (victoriously) traversed heaven, earth, and waters, creating ample space for their homes. May the strong Agni, after receiving offerings, shine brilliantly near Kanva. May he neigh like a horse in battles.

Stanza 1.36.9

सं सी॑दस्व म॒हाँ अ॑सि॒ शोच॑स्व देव॒वीत॑मः | वि धू॒मम॑ग्ने अरु॒षं मि॑येध्य सृ॒ज प्र॑शस्त दर्श॒तम् ||

sáṁ sīdasva mahā́m̐ asi śócasva devavī́tamaḥ ví dhūmám agne aruṣám miyedhya sr̥já praśasta darśatám

Take your seat, Agni, for you are great! Shine forth, you who are the best guest of the gods. O holy Agni, release your visible and beautiful red smoke!

Stanza 1.36.10

यं त्वा॑ दे॒वासो॒ मन॑वे द॒धुरि॒ह यजि॑ष्ठं हव्यवाहन | यं कण्वो॒ मेध्या॑तिथिर्धन॒स्पृतं॒ यं वृषा॒ यमु॑पस्तु॒तः ||

yáṁ tvā devā́so mánave dadhúr ihá ̀ yájiṣṭhaṁ havyavāhana yáṁ káṇvo médhyātithir dhanaspŕ̥taṁ ̀ yáṁ vŕ̥ṣā yám upastutáḥ

Agni, you are the one the gods established for Manu and all people as the best priest and offerer of sacrifices. We call upon you, O bearer of offerings! Kanva, Medhyatithi, Vrishan, and Upastuta worship you, the winner of riches.

Stanza 1.36.11

यम॒ग्निं मेध्या॑तिथिः॒ कण्व॑ ई॒ध ऋ॒तादधि॑ | तस्य॒ प्रेषो॑ दीदियु॒स्तमि॒मा ऋच॒स्तम॒ग्निं व॑र्धयामसि ||

yám agním médhyātithiḥ káṇva īdhá r̥tā́d ádhi tásya préṣo dīdiyus tám imā́ ŕ̥cas ̀ tám agníṁ vardhayāmasi

Agni, whom Medhyatithi and Kanva kindled for the cosmic order, shines forth with great brilliance. These hymns and we ourselves magnify and praise that Agni.

Stanza 1.36.12

रा॒यस्पू॑र्धि स्वधा॒वोऽस्ति॒ हि तेऽग्ने॑ दे॒वेष्वाप्य॑म् | त्वं वाज॑स्य॒ श्रुत्य॑स्य राजसि॒ स नो॑ मृळ म॒हाँ अ॑सि ||

rāyás pūrdhi svadhāvó 'sti hí ̀ té 'gne devéṣv ā́pyam tváṁ vā́jasya śrútyasya rājasi ̀ sá no mr̥ḷa mahā́m̐ asi

Fill us with wealth, O self-reliant Agni! You indeed have connection with the gods. You rule over glorious fame and strength. Show mercy to us; you are indeed great.

Stanza 1.36.13

ऊ॒र्ध्व ऊ॒ षु ण॑ ऊ॒तये॒ तिष्ठा॑ दे॒वो न स॑वि॒ता | ऊ॒र्ध्वो वाज॑स्य॒ सनि॑ता॒ यद॒ञ्जिभि॑र्वा॒घद्भि॑र्वि॒ह्वया॑महे ||

ūrdhvá ū ṣú ṇa ūtáye tíṣṭhā devó ná savitā́ ūrdhvó vā́jasya sánitā yád añjíbhir ̀ vāghádbhir vihváyāmahe

Rise up, Agni, for our help! Stand tall like the god Savitr, the supreme bestower of strength and wealth. When we call upon you with our worship and tributes, may you stand ready.

Stanza 1.36.14

ऊ॒र्ध्वो नः॑ पा॒ह्यंह॑सो॒ नि के॒तुना॒ विश्वं॒ सम॒त्रिणं॑ दह | कृ॒धी न॑ ऊ॒र्ध्वाञ्च॒रथा॑य जी॒वसे॑ वि॒दा दे॒वेषु॑ नो॒ दुवः॑ ||

ūrdhvó naḥ pāhy áṁhaso ní ketúnā ̀ víśvaṁ sám atríṇaṁ daha kr̥dhī́ na ūrdhvā́ñ caráthāya jīváse ̀ vidā́ devéṣu no dúvaḥ

Agni, protect us from evil with your radiant presence. Destroy all destructive enemies. Raise us up so we can walk and live vibrantly. May our service be recognized among the gods.

Stanza 1.36.15

पा॒हि नो॑ अग्ने र॒क्षसः॑ पा॒हि धू॒र्तेररा॑व्णः | पा॒हि रीष॑त उ॒त वा॒ जिघां॑सतो॒ बृह॑द्भानो॒ यवि॑ष्ठ्य ||

pāhí no agne rakṣásaḥ pāhí dhūrtér árāvṇaḥ pāhí rī́ṣata utá vā jíghāṁsato ̀ bŕ̥hadbhāno yáviṣṭhya

Agni, save us from demons! Save us from wicked tricksters and stingy people! Save us from those who wish us harm or intend to kill us, O Agni, brightest and youngest!

Stanza 1.36.16

घ॒नेव॒ विष्व॒ग्वि ज॒ह्यरा॑व्ण॒स्तपु॑र्जम्भ॒ यो अ॑स्म॒ध्रुक् | यो मर्त्यः॒ शिशी॑ते॒ अत्य॒क्तुभि॒र्मा नः॒ स रि॒पुरी॑शत ||

ghanéva víṣvag ví jahy árāvṇas ̀ tápurjambha yó asmadhrúk yó mártyaḥ śíśīte áty aktúbhir ̀ mā́ naḥ sá ripúr īśata

O Agni with fiery jaws, strike down the wicked and deceitful everywhere like with a club! May that mortal who sharpens weapons against us at night not overcome us.

Stanza 1.36.17

अ॒ग्निर्व॑व्ने सु॒वीर्य॑म॒ग्निः कण्वा॑य॒ सौभ॑गम् | अ॒ग्निः प्राव॑न्मि॒त्रोत मेध्या॑तिथिम॒ग्निः सा॒ता उ॑पस्तु॒तम् ||

agnír vavne suvī́ryam agníḥ káṇvāya saúbhagam agníḥ prā́van mitrótá médhyātithim ̀ agníḥ sātā́ upastutám

Agni has granted heroic strength to the people. Agni has granted prosperity to Kanva. Agni, along with Mitra, helped Medhyatithi, and Agni helped Upastuta achieve success.

Stanza 1.36.18

अ॒ग्निना॑ तु॒र्वशं॒ यदुं॑ परा॒वत॑ उ॒ग्रादे॑वं हवामहे | अ॒ग्निर्न॑य॒न्नव॑वास्त्वं बृ॒हद्र॑थं तु॒र्वीतिं॒ दस्य॑वे॒ सहः॑ ||

agnínā turváśaṁ yádum parāváta ̀ ugrā́devaṁ havāmahe agnír nayan návavāstvam br̥hádrathaṁ ̀ turvī́tiṁ dásyave sáhaḥ

Through Agni, we call to us from afar Turvasa, Yadu, and Ugradeva. Agni, lead Navavâstva, Brihadratha, and Turvîti to give us strength against the Dasyu.

Stanza 1.36.19

नि त्वाम॑ग्ने॒ मनु॑र्दधे॒ ज्योति॒र्जना॑य॒ शश्व॑ते | दी॒देथ॒ कण्व॑ ऋ॒तजा॑त उक्षि॒तो यं न॑म॒स्यन्ति॑ कृ॒ष्टयः॑ ||

ní tvā́m agne mánur dadhe jyótir jánāya śáśvate dīdétha káṇva r̥tájāta ukṣitó ̀ yáṁ namasyánti kr̥ṣṭáyaḥ

Manu established you, Agni, as a light for all people. You shine brightly for Kanva, born of cosmic order and fully grown. All the communities worship and revere you.

Stanza 1.36.20

त्वे॒षासो॑ अ॒ग्नेरम॑वन्तो अ॒र्चयो॑ भी॒मासो॒ न प्रती॑तये | र॒क्ष॒स्विनः॒ सद॒मिद्या॑तु॒माव॑तो॒ विश्वं॒ सम॒त्रिणं॑ दह ||

tveṣā́so agnér ámavanto arcáyo ̀ bhīmā́so ná prátītaye rakṣasvínaḥ sádam íd yātumā́vato víśvaṁ sám atríṇaṁ daha

Agni's flames are brilliant, powerful, and terrible, not to be resisted. Continuously burn down the sorcerers and those who employ magic. Burn completely every destructive foe.
