Featured Hymns
Agni
This hymn opens the Rigveda by praising Agni, the crucial fire god. He's honored as the household priest and divine messenger, invited to bring the gods and bestow wealth, prosperity, and strong offspring. It's a foundational request for well-being and a close, father-like connection with this vital deity.
The Origin of Things
This profound hymn delves into the mystery of creation, beginning before existence or non-existence, air or sky. It speaks of a singular "One" breathing in darkness, from which desire arose as the first seed of thought. The hymn questions who truly knows the origin of the cosmos, hinting at an ultimate, perhaps unknowable, overseer.
Purusa
The profound Purusha Sukta describes the cosmic being, Purusha, whose vast form encompasses and transcends the universe. Through his self-sacrifice, the gods bring forth all creation: the cosmos, animals, sacred texts, the social orders, and the very gods themselves. It's a foundational myth of cosmic origins and order.

Soma
The deity of the sacred, intoxicating juice, who is also identified with the Moon, presiding over life, immortality, and inspiration.

Creatures & Concepts
Cows
Cows were central to Vedic life — symbols of wealth, food, and good fortune. These hymns praise cows for their milk and nurturing nature, treating them as gifts from the gods that bring peace and prosperity.
Dead One
This hymn speaks to the departed soul — comforting it, guiding it toward peace, and assuring reunion with ancestors. It shows the early Vedic view of death not as an end, but as a passage into another form of existence.
Ghrita (Ghee)
Ghee — clarified butter — is described as golden and radiant, a substance of both earth and fire. It flows in rituals as an offering to the gods, symbolizing purity, nourishment, and the sweetness of divine favor.
Pressing Stones
The pressing stones, used to extract Soma, are treated almost like living participants in the sacrifice. Their rhythmic striking is compared to song and praise — turning the ritual act into a symbol of harmony and divine cooperation.
