Hymn 5.40

Stanzas: 9

Addressed to: Indra, Surya and Atri

Rishi: Atri Bhauma

This hymn begins by vigorously inviting the strong Indra, slayer of Vritra, to drink the potent Soma. It then dramatically recounts the solar eclipse, where the Asura Svarbhanu pierced the sun with darkness. The hymn celebrates Atri, the priest, who through ritual and prayer, discovered the hidden sun and drove away the Asura's magic.
