Stanza 9.96.1

प्र से॑ना॒नीः शूरो॒ अग्रे॒ रथा॑नां ग॒व्यन्ने॑ति॒ हर्ष॑ते अस्य॒ सेना॑ | भ॒द्रान्कृ॒ण्वन्नि॑न्द्रह॒वान्त्सखि॑भ्य॒ आ सोमो॒ वस्त्रा॑ रभ॒सानि॑ दत्ते ||

prá senānī́ḥ śū́ro ágre ráthānāṁ gavyánn eti hárṣate asya sénā bhadrā́n kr̥ṇvánn indrahavā́n sákhibhya ā́ sómo vástrā rabhasā́ni datte

The commander, a hero, goes forth at the head of chariots, seeking victory. His army rejoices. Soma grants fine garments and strength, and for his friends, blesses their invocation of Indra.

Stanza 9.96.2

सम॑स्य॒ हरिं॒ हर॑यो मृजन्त्यश्वह॒यैरनि॑शितं॒ नमो॑भिः | आ ति॑ष्ठति॒ रथ॒मिन्द्र॑स्य॒ सखा॑ वि॒द्वाँ ए॑ना सुम॒तिं या॒त्यच्छ॑ ||

sám asya háriṁ hárayo mr̥janty aśvahayaír ániśitaṁ námobhiḥ ā́ tiṣṭhati rátham índrasya sákhā vidvā́m̐ enā sumatíṁ yāty ácha

Men bedeck his golden essence with devotion, invigorating him like horses. Soma, Indra's friend, knowing, mounts the chariot to receive our prayers.

Stanza 9.96.3

स नो॑ देव दे॒वता॑ते पवस्व म॒हे सो॑म॒ प्सर॑स इन्द्र॒पानः॑ | कृ॒ण्वन्न॒पो व॒र्षय॒न्द्यामु॒तेमामु॒रोरा नो॑ वरिवस्या पुना॒नः ||

sá no deva devátāte pavasva mahé soma psárasa indrapā́naḥ kr̥ṇvánn apó varṣáyan dyā́m utémā́m urór ā́ no varivasyā punānáḥ

O divine Soma, flow for the gods' service and for great nourishment, as Indra's drink. Make the waters flow, bedewing earth and sky, and from the vastness, provide for us while we cleanse you.

Stanza 9.96.4

अजी॑त॒येऽह॑तये पवस्व स्व॒स्तये॑ स॒र्वता॑तये बृह॒ते | तदु॑शन्ति॒ विश्व॑ इ॒मे सखा॑य॒स्तद॒हं व॑श्मि पवमान सोम ||

ájītayé 'hataye pavasva svastáye sarvátātaye br̥haté tád uśanti víśva imé sákhāyas tád aháṁ vaśmi pavamāna soma

Flow for victory, for well-being, for complete prosperity. All beings desire this; I too wish this, O Soma, as you are purified.

Stanza 9.96.5

सोमः॑ पवते जनि॒ता म॑ती॒नां ज॑नि॒ता दि॒वो ज॑नि॒ता पृ॑थि॒व्याः | ज॒नि॒ताग्नेर्ज॑नि॒ता सूर्य॑स्य जनि॒तेन्द्र॑स्य जनि॒तोत विष्णोः॑ ||

sómaḥ pavate janitā́ matīnā́ṁ janitā́ divó janitā́ pr̥thivyā́ḥ janitā́gnér janitā́ sū́ryasya janiténdrasya janitótá víṣṇoḥ

Soma flows, the creator of thoughts, the creator of the sky, the creator of the earth, the creator of fire, the creator of the sun, and the creator of Indra and Vishnu.

Stanza 9.96.6

ब्र॒ह्मा दे॒वानां॑ पद॒वीः क॑वी॒नामृषि॒र्विप्रा॑णां महि॒षो मृ॒गाणा॑म् | श्ये॒नो गृध्रा॑णां॒ स्वधि॑ति॒र्वना॑नां॒ सोमः॑ प॒वित्र॒मत्ये॑ति॒ रेभ॑न् ||

brahmā́ devā́nām padavī́ḥ kavīnā́m ŕ̥ṣir víprāṇām mahiṣó mr̥gā́ṇām śyenó gŕ̥dhrāṇāṁ svádhitir vánānāṁ sómaḥ pavítram áty eti rébhan

Soma is the divine principle among gods, the path for poets, the sage for the wise, the great bull among animals, the falcon among vultures, the axe of forests, and he joyfully moves through the purifying filter.

Stanza 9.96.7

प्रावी॑विपद्वा॒च ऊ॒र्मिं न सिन्धु॒र्गिरः॒ सोमः॒ पव॑मानो मनी॒षाः | अ॒न्तः पश्य॑न्वृ॒जने॒माव॑रा॒ण्या ति॑ष्ठति वृष॒भो गोषु॑ जा॒नन् ||

prā́vīvipad vācá ūrmíṁ ná síndhur gíraḥ sómaḥ pávamāno manīṣā́ḥ antáḥ páśyan vr̥jánemā́varāṇy ā́ tiṣṭhati vr̥ṣabhó góṣu jānán

Purifying Soma, like a river, stirs the flow of speech and thoughts. Seeing the powers below, he settles among the cattle like a knowing bull.

Stanza 9.96.8

स म॑त्स॒रः पृ॒त्सु व॒न्वन्नवा॑तः स॒हस्र॑रेता अ॒भि वाज॑मर्ष | इन्द्रा॑येन्दो॒ पव॑मानो मनी॒ष्यं१॒॑शोरू॒र्मिमी॑रय॒ गा इ॑ष॒ण्यन् ||

sá matsaráḥ pr̥tsú vanvánn ávātaḥ sahásraretā abhí vā́jam arṣa índrāyendo pávamāno manīṣy àṁśór ūrmím īraya gā́ iṣaṇyán

O Soma, joyous warrior, flow with strength and abundance towards Indra. Be thoughtful, drive the cattle and the plant's essence.

Stanza 9.96.9

परि॑ प्रि॒यः क॒लशे॑ दे॒ववा॑त॒ इन्द्रा॑य॒ सोमो॒ रण्यो॒ मदा॑य | स॒हस्र॑धारः श॒तवा॑ज॒ इन्दु॑र्वा॒जी न सप्तिः॒ सम॑ना जिगाति ||

pári priyáḥ kaláśe devávāta índrāya sómo ráṇyo mádāya sahásradhāraḥ śatávāja índur vājī́ ná sáptiḥ sámanā jigāti

Beloved Soma, pleasing to the gods, moves to the vessel for Indra's delight. With a thousand streams and hundred powers, like a strong horse, Indu goes to the assembly.

Stanza 9.96.10

स पू॒र्व्यो व॑सु॒विज्जाय॑मानो मृजा॒नो अ॒प्सु दु॑दुहा॒नो अद्रौ॑ | अ॒भि॒श॒स्ति॒पा भुव॑नस्य॒ राजा॑ वि॒दद्गा॒तुं ब्रह्म॑णे पू॒यमा॑नः ||

sá pūrvyó vasuvíj jā́yamāno mr̥jānó apsú duduhānó ádrau abhiśastipā́ bhúvanasya rā́jā vidád gātúm bráhmaṇe pūyámānaḥ

He, Soma, born long ago as a treasure-finder, is cleansed in waters and pressed by the stone. Protector from curses, king of existence, he finds the way for prayer while being purified.

Stanza 9.96.11

त्वया॒ हि नः॑ पि॒तरः॑ सोम॒ पूर्वे॒ कर्मा॑णि च॒क्रुः प॑वमान॒ धीराः॑ | व॒न्वन्नवा॑तः परि॒धीँरपो॑र्णु वी॒रेभि॒रश्वै॑र्म॒घवा॑ भवा नः ||

tváyā hí naḥ pitáraḥ soma pū́rve kármāṇi cakrúḥ pavamāna dhī́rāḥ vanvánn ávātaḥ paridhī́m̐r áporṇu vīrébhir áśvair maghávā bhavā naḥ

O Soma, our wise ancestors of old performed their duties with your help. O purifying Soma, remain undefeated, open the barriers, and grant us wealth, heroes, and horses.

Stanza 9.96.12

यथाप॑वथा॒ मन॑वे वयो॒धा अ॑मित्र॒हा व॑रिवो॒विद्ध॒विष्मा॑न् | ए॒वा प॑वस्व॒ द्रवि॑णं॒ दधा॑न॒ इन्द्रे॒ सं ति॑ष्ठ ज॒नयायु॑धानि ||

yáthā́pavathā mánave vayodhā́ amitrahā́ varivovíd dhavíṣmān evā́ pavasva dráviṇaṁ dádhāna índre sáṁ tiṣṭha janáyā́yudhāni

As you previously flowed for mankind, bringing life, defeating enemies, and bestowing abundance, O Soma, continue flowing with riches. Unite with Indra and bring forth weapons.

Stanza 9.96.13

पव॑स्व सोम॒ मधु॑माँ ऋ॒तावा॒पो वसा॑नो॒ अधि॒ सानो॒ अव्ये॑ | अव॒ द्रोणा॑नि घृ॒तवा॑न्ति सीद म॒दिन्त॑मो मत्स॒र इ॑न्द्र॒पानः॑ ||

pávasva soma mádhumām̐ r̥tā́vāpó vásāno ádhi sā́no ávye áva dróṇāni ghr̥távānti sīda madíntamo matsará indrapā́naḥ

O Soma, flow with sweetness and order, clothed in waters on the high summit. Settle in the rich vessels, most delightful and invigorating drink for Indra.

Stanza 9.96.14

वृ॒ष्टिं दि॒वः श॒तधा॑रः पवस्व सहस्र॒सा वा॑ज॒युर्दे॒ववी॑तौ | सं सिन्धु॑भिः क॒लशे॑ वावशा॒नः समु॒स्रिया॑भिः प्रति॒रन्न॒ आयुः॑ ||

vr̥ṣṭíṁ diváḥ śatádhāraḥ pavasva sahasrasā́ vājayúr devávītau sáṁ síndhubhiḥ kaláśe vāvaśānáḥ sám usríyābhiḥ pratirán na ā́yuḥ

Flow, O hundred-streamed Soma, winner of thousands, for the gods' feast. Bring the rain from heaven, roar with the rivers in the vessel, and mixing with milk, prolong our life.

Stanza 9.96.15

ए॒ष स्य सोमो॑ म॒तिभिः॑ पुना॒नोऽत्यो॒ न वा॒जी तर॒तीदरा॑तीः | पयो॒ न दु॒ग्धमदि॑तेरिषि॒रमु॒र्वि॑व गा॒तुः सु॒यमो॒ न वोळ्हा॑ ||

eṣá syá sómo matíbhiḥ punānó 'tyo ná vājī́ táratī́d árātīḥ páyo ná dugdhám áditer iṣirám urv .ìva gātúḥ suyámo ná vóḷhā

This purified Soma, with hymns, moves beyond obstacles like a swift horse. Like fresh milk from Aditi, like easy passage, like a well-controlled horse, he flows.

Stanza 9.96.16

स्वा॒यु॒धः सो॒तृभिः॑ पू॒यमा॑नो॒ऽभ्य॑र्ष॒ गुह्यं॒ चारु॒ नाम॑ | अ॒भि वाजं॒ सप्ति॑रिव श्रव॒स्याभि वा॒युम॒भि गा दे॑व सोम ||

svāyudháḥ sotŕ̥bhiḥ pūyámāno 'bhy àrṣa gúhyaṁ cā́ru nā́ma abhí vā́jaṁ sáptir iva śravasyā́bhí vāyúm abhí gā́ deva soma

O Soma, armed with divine weapons and purified by pressers, flow to us with hidden beauty. Like a horse seeking fame, bring wealth, attend to Vayu, and provide cattle.

Stanza 9.96.17

शिशुं॑ जज्ञा॒नं ह॑र्य॒तं मृ॑जन्ति शु॒म्भन्ति॒ वह्निं॑ म॒रुतो॑ ग॒णेन॑ | क॒विर्गी॒र्भिः काव्ये॑ना क॒विः सन्त्सोमः॑ प॒वित्र॒मत्ये॑ति॒ रेभ॑न् ||

śíśuṁ jajñānáṁ haryatám mr̥janti śumbhánti váhnim marúto gaṇéna kavír gīrbhíḥ kā́vyenā kavíḥ sán sómaḥ pavítram áty eti rébhan

The Maruts adorn the newly born, lovely Soma, the car-horse, with their troop. Soma, a poet with wisdom, joyfully moves through the purifying filter with songs.

Stanza 9.96.18

ऋषि॑मना॒ य ऋ॑षि॒कृत्स्व॒र्षाः स॒हस्र॑णीथः पद॒वीः क॑वी॒नाम् | तृ॒तीयं॒ धाम॑ महि॒षः सिषा॑स॒न्त्सोमो॑ वि॒राज॒मनु॑ राजति॒ ष्टुप् ||

ŕ̥ṣimanā yá r̥ṣikŕ̥t svarṣā́ḥ sahásraṇīthaḥ padavī́ḥ kavīnā́m tr̥tī́yaṁ dhā́ma mahiṣáḥ síṣāsan sómo virā́jam ánu rājati ṣṭúp

O Soma, with the mind of a sage, maker of sages, winner of heaven, leader of poets, great bull, you reign brilliantly like Viraj.

Stanza 9.96.19

च॒मू॒षच्छ्ये॒नः श॑कु॒नो वि॒भृत्वा॑ गोवि॒न्दुर्द्र॒प्स आयु॑धानि॒ बिभ्र॑त् | अ॒पामू॒र्मिं सच॑मानः समु॒द्रं तु॒रीयं॒ धाम॑ महि॒षो वि॑वक्ति ||

camūṣác chyenáḥ śakunó vibhŕ̥tvā govindúr drapsá ā́yudhāni bíbhrat apā́m ūrmíṁ sácamānaḥ samudráṁ turī́yaṁ dhā́ma mahiṣó vivakti

Soma is like a hawk in bowls, a bird extending, a banner seeking cows, a drop with weapons. Following the wave of waters and the ocean, this great bull speaks his fourth form.

Stanza 9.96.20

मर्यो॒ न शु॒भ्रस्त॒न्वं॑ मृजा॒नोऽत्यो॒ न सृत्वा॑ स॒नये॒ धना॑नाम् | वृषे॑व यू॒था परि॒ कोश॒मर्ष॒न्कनि॑क्रदच्च॒म्वो॒३॒॑रा वि॑वेश ||

máryo ná śubhrás tanvàm mr̥jānó 'tyo ná sŕ̥tvā sanáye dhánānām vŕ̥ṣeva yūthā́ pári kóśam árṣan kánikradac camvòr ā́ viveśa

Like a bright youth cleansing himself, Soma rushes like a horse for riches. Like a bull among herds, he flows to the vessel, roaring and entering the bowls.

Stanza 9.96.21

पव॑स्वेन्दो॒ पव॑मानो॒ महो॑भिः॒ कनि॑क्रद॒त्परि॒ वारा॑ण्यर्ष | क्रीळ॑ञ्च॒म्वो॒३॒॑रा वि॑श पू॒यमा॑न॒ इन्द्रं॑ ते॒ रसो॑ मदि॒रो म॑मत्तु ||

pávasvendo pávamāno máhobhiḥ kánikradat pári vā́rāṇy arṣa krī́ḷañ camvòr ā́ viśa pūyámāna índraṁ te ráso madiró mamattu

Flow powerfully, O Soma, while purifying. Roar loudly, enter the vessels, and let your delightful juice make Indra joyful.

Stanza 9.96.22

प्रास्य॒ धारा॑ बृह॒तीर॑सृग्रन्न॒क्तो गोभिः॑ क॒लशाँ॒ आ वि॑वेश | साम॑ कृ॒ण्वन्त्सा॑म॒न्यो॑ विप॒श्चित्क्रन्द॑न्नेत्य॒भि सख्यु॒र्न जा॒मिम् ||

prā́sya dhā́rā br̥hatī́r asr̥grann aktó góbhiḥ kaláśām̐ ā́ viveśa sā́ma kr̥ṇván sāmanyò vipaścít krándann ety abhí sákhyur ná jāmím

His great streams are released, and Soma, anointed with milk, enters the vessels. Singing his song skillfully, like a singer approaching kin, he roars.

Stanza 9.96.23

अ॒प॒घ्नन्ने॑षि पवमान॒ शत्रू॑न्प्रि॒यां न जा॒रो अ॒भिगी॑त॒ इन्दुः॑ | सीद॒न्वने॑षु शकु॒नो न पत्वा॒ सोमः॑ पुना॒नः क॒लशे॑षु॒ सत्ता॑ ||

apaghnánn eṣi pavamāna śátrūn priyā́ṁ ná jāró abhígīta índuḥ sī́dan váneṣu śakunó ná pátvā sómaḥ punānáḥ kaláśeṣu sáttā

O purifying Soma, you advance, driving away enemies, like a lover to his beloved. Like a bird settling in a forest, you settle in the vessels.

Stanza 9.96.24

आ ते॒ रुचः॒ पव॑मानस्य सोम॒ योषे॑व यन्ति सु॒दुघाः॑ सुधा॒राः | हरि॒रानी॑तः पुरु॒वारो॑ अ॒प्स्वचि॑क्रदत्क॒लशे॑ देवयू॒नाम् ||

ā́ te rúcaḥ pávamānasya soma yóṣeva yanti sudúghāḥ sudhārā́ḥ hárir ā́nītaḥ puruvā́ro apsv ácikradat kaláśe devayūnā́m

O Soma, your radiant streams come like a woman, flowing with abundance and sweetness. You, golden and rich in benefits, brought to the waters, have roared in the vessel of the devotees.
