Stanza 8.97.1

या इ॑न्द्र॒ भुज॒ आभ॑रः॒ स्व॑र्वाँ॒ असु॑रेभ्यः | स्तो॒तार॒मिन्म॑घवन्नस्य वर्धय॒ ये च॒ त्वे वृ॒क्तब॑र्हिषः ||

yā́ indra bhúja ā́bharaḥ svàrvām̐ ásurebhyaḥ stotā́ram ín maghavann asya vardhaya yé ca tvé vr̥ktábarhiṣaḥ

O Indra, with what might you acquired from the Asuras, empower us, O Maghavan (generous one)! And increase the one who praises, and those who prepare the sacrificial grass for you.

Stanza 8.97.2

यमि॑न्द्र दधि॒षे त्वमश्वं॒ गां भा॒गमव्य॑यम् | यज॑माने सुन्व॒ति दक्षि॑णावति॒ तस्मि॒न्तं धे॑हि॒ मा प॒णौ ||

yám indra dadhiṣé tvám áśvaṁ gā́m bhāgám ávyayam yájamāne sunvatí dákṣiṇāvati tásmin táṁ dhehi mā́ paṇaú

O Indra, you who possess the horse and cattle wealth, and imperishable share, place that share with the one who performs sacrifices, offers Soma, and gives gifts, not with the stingy.

Stanza 8.97.3

य इ॑न्द्र॒ सस्त्य॑व्र॒तो॑ऽनु॒ष्वाप॒मदे॑वयुः | स्वैः ष एवै॑र्मुमुर॒त्पोष्यं॑ र॒यिं स॑नु॒तर्धे॑हि॒ तं ततः॑ ||

yá indra sásty avratò 'nuṣvā́pam ádevayuḥ svaíḥ ṣá évair mumurat póṣyaṁ rayíṁ sanutár dhehi táṁ tátaḥ

He who is without vows, without devotion, sleeps soundly, may he perish by his own ways. Hide from him the nourishing wealth, O Indra.

Stanza 8.97.4

यच्छ॒क्रासि॑ परा॒वति॒ यद॑र्वा॒वति॑ वृत्रहन् | अत॑स्त्वा गी॒र्भिर्द्यु॒गदि॑न्द्र के॒शिभिः॑ सु॒तावाँ॒ आ वि॑वासति ||

yác chakrā́si parāváti yád arvāváti vr̥trahan átas tvā gīrbhír dyugád indra keśíbhiḥ sutā́vām̐ ā́ vivāsati

Whether you are far away, O Indra, or near, O Vritra-slayer, from there, the one who has pressed the Soma invites you with hymns reaching the sky, and with his steeds.

Stanza 8.97.5

यद्वासि॑ रोच॒ने दि॒वः स॑मु॒द्रस्याधि॑ वि॒ष्टपि॑ | यत्पार्थि॑वे॒ सद॑ने वृत्रहन्तम॒ यद॒न्तरि॑क्ष॒ आ ग॑हि ||

yád vā́si rocané diváḥ samudrásyā́dhi viṣṭápi yát pā́rthive sádane vr̥trahantama yád antárikṣa ā́ gahi

Whether you are in the light of heaven, or in the ocean's expanse, or in earthly dwellings, O best of Vritra-slayers, or in the atmosphere, come!

Stanza 8.97.6

स नः॒ सोमे॑षु सोमपाः सु॒तेषु॑ शवसस्पते | मा॒दय॑स्व॒ राध॑सा सू॒नृता॑व॒तेन्द्र॑ रा॒या परी॑णसा ||

sá naḥ sómeṣu somapāḥ sutéṣu śavasas pate mādáyasva rā́dhasā sūnŕ̥tāvaténdra rāyā́ párīṇasā

O drinker of Soma, Lord of strength, rejoice with us at the Soma offerings with your bounty and abundant wealth, O Indra!

Stanza 8.97.7

मा न॑ इन्द्र॒ परा॑ वृण॒ग्भवा॑ नः सध॒माद्यः॑ | त्वं न॑ ऊ॒ती त्वमिन्न॒ आप्यं॒ मा न॑ इन्द्र॒ परा॑ वृणक् ||

mā́ na indra párā vr̥ṇag bhávā naḥ sadhamā́dyaḥ tváṁ na ūtī́ tvám ín na ā́pyam mā́ na indra párā vr̥ṇak

O Indra, do not turn us away! Be our companion in feasting. You are our protection, you are our kin. O Indra, do not turn us away!

Stanza 8.97.8

अ॒स्मे इ॑न्द्र॒ सचा॑ सु॒ते नि ष॑दा पी॒तये॒ मधु॑ | कृ॒धी ज॑रि॒त्रे म॑घव॒न्नवो॑ म॒हद॒स्मे इ॑न्द्र॒ सचा॑ सु॒ते ||

asmé indra sácā suté ní ṣadā pītáye mádhu kr̥dhī́ jaritré maghavann ávo mahád asmé indra sácā suté

O Indra, sit with us, sit by the prepared Soma for drinking the sweet. O Maghavan, grant great favor to the singer, O Indra, sit with us by the prepared Soma.

Stanza 8.97.9

न त्वा॑ दे॒वास॑ आशत॒ न मर्त्या॑सो अद्रिवः | विश्वा॑ जा॒तानि॒ शव॑साभि॒भूर॑सि॒ न त्वा॑ दे॒वास॑ आशत ||

ná tvā devā́sa āśata ná mártyāso adrivaḥ víśvā jātā́ni śávasābhibhū́r asi ná tvā devā́sa āśata

Neither gods nor mortals have reached you, O wielder of the thunderbolt. You surpass all created beings by your strength. Neither gods nor mortals have reached you.

Stanza 8.97.10

विश्वाः॒ पृत॑ना अभि॒भूत॑रं॒ नरं॑ स॒जूस्त॑तक्षु॒रिन्द्रं॑ जज॒नुश्च॑ रा॒जसे॑ | क्रत्वा॒ वरि॑ष्ठं॒ वर॑ आ॒मुरि॑मु॒तोग्रमोजि॑ष्ठं त॒वसं॑ तर॒स्विन॑म् ||

víśvāḥ pŕ̥tanā abhibhū́taraṁ náraṁ sajū́s tatakṣur índraṁ jajanúś ca rājáse krátvā váriṣṭhaṁ vára āmúrim utógrám ójiṣṭhaṁ tavásaṁ tarasvínam

All peoples fashioned the hero Indra, the best, for ruling, who surpasses all in battle, and is strong, most powerful, most vigorous, and resolute.

Stanza 8.97.11

समीं॑ रे॒भासो॑ अस्वर॒न्निन्द्रं॒ सोम॑स्य पी॒तये॑ | स्व॑र्पतिं॒ यदीं॑ वृ॒धे धृ॒तव्र॑तो॒ ह्योज॑सा॒ समू॒तिभिः॑ ||

sám īṁ rebhā́so asvarann índraṁ sómasya pītáye svàrpatiṁ yád īṁ vr̥dhé dhr̥távrato hy ójasā sám ūtíbhiḥ

The bards sang together to Indra, the lord of light, for drinking Soma, that he, steadfast in vows, might aid with his strength and aids.

Stanza 8.97.12

ने॒मिं न॑मन्ति॒ चक्ष॑सा मे॒षं विप्रा॑ अभि॒स्वरा॑ | सु॒दी॒तयो॑ वो अ॒द्रुहोऽपि॒ कर्णे॑ तर॒स्विनः॒ समृक्व॑भिः ||

nemíṁ namanti cákṣasā meṣáṁ víprā abhisvárā sudītáyo vo adrúhó 'pi kárṇe tarasvínaḥ sám ŕ̥kvabhiḥ

The inspired sages form a circle around the Ram. The swift, energetic ones, free from deceit, are with the chanters, near the ear.

Stanza 8.97.13

तमिन्द्रं॑ जोहवीमि म॒घवा॑नमु॒ग्रं स॒त्रा दधा॑न॒मप्र॑तिष्कुतं॒ शवां॑सि | मंहि॑ष्ठो गी॒र्भिरा च॑ य॒ज्ञियो॑ व॒वर्त॑द्रा॒ये नो॒ विश्वा॑ सु॒पथा॑ कृणोतु व॒ज्री ||

tám índraṁ johavīmi maghávānam ugráṁ satrā́ dádhānam ápratiṣkutaṁ śávāṁsi máṁhiṣṭho gīrbhír ā́ ca yajñíyo vavártad rāyé no víśvā supáthā kr̥ṇotu vajrī́

I loudly call that Indra, the mighty, the powerful, who holds power and is irresistible. May the most liberal, divine one, with hymns and reverence, lead us to wealth and make all our paths good, O Vajrin (wielder of thunderbolt)!

Stanza 8.97.14

त्वं पुर॑ इन्द्र चि॒किदे॑ना॒ व्योज॑सा शविष्ठ शक्र नाश॒यध्यै॑ | त्वद्विश्वा॑नि॒ भुव॑नानि वज्रि॒न्द्यावा॑ रेजेते पृथि॒वी च॑ भी॒षा ||

tvám púra indra cikíd enā vy ójasā śaviṣṭha śakra nāśayádhyai tvád víśvāni bhúvanāni vajrin dyā́vā rejete pr̥thivī́ ca bhīṣā́

You know well, O Indra, O most powerful Shakra, to destroy these. All worlds before you tremble, O Vajrin; heaven and earth shake with fear.

Stanza 8.97.15

तन्म॑ ऋ॒तमि॑न्द्र शूर चित्र पात्व॒पो न व॑ज्रिन्दुरि॒ताति॑ पर्षि॒ भूरि॑ | क॒दा न॑ इन्द्र रा॒य आ द॑शस्येर्वि॒श्वप्स्न्य॑स्य स्पृह॒याय्य॑स्य राजन् ||

tán ma r̥tám indra śūra citra pātv apó ná vajrin duritā́ti parṣi bhū́ri kadā́ na indra rāyá ā́ daśasyer viśvápsnyasya spr̥hayā́yyasya rājan

May your truth, O Indra, O heroic, wondrous one, protect me. O Vajrin, carry me over difficulties like waters. When, O Indra, O King, will you bestow upon us wealth that sustains all and is desirable?
