प्रति॑ वां॒ सूर॒ उदि॑ते सू॒क्तैर्मि॒त्रं हु॑वे॒ वरु॑णं पू॒तद॑क्षम् | ययो॑रसु॒र्य१॒॑मक्षि॑तं॒ ज्येष्ठं॒ विश्व॑स्य॒ याम॑न्ना॒चिता॑ जिग॒त्नु ||
práti vāṁ sū́ra údite sūktaír mitráṁ huve váruṇam pūtádakṣam yáyor asuryàm ákṣitaṁ jyéṣṭhaṁ víśvasya yā́mann ācítā jigatnú
With hymns, when the sun has risen, I call to you both, Mitra and Varuna, whose discernment is pure. Yours is the supreme, unwavering divine power, the greatest in all the world, that comes to the attentive seeker.
The hymn begins with a prayer to the divine twin deities Mitra and Varuna. The speaker invokes them at the moment the sun rises, acknowledging their supreme and eternal divine power. They are called upon to be present and attentive as they bring their blessings and aid, suggesting they are attentive to human requests.

tā́ hí devā́nām ásurā tā́v aryā́ tā́ naḥ kṣitī́ḥ karatam ūrjáyantīḥ aśyā́ma mitrāvaruṇā vayáṁ vāṁ dyā́vā ca yátra pīpáyann áhā ca
For you two are the divine powers of the gods, and also the guardians. Make our lands fertile, you two. May we, Mitra and Varuna, perceive you, where heaven, earth, and days have nourished us.
This stanza praises Mitra and Varuna, describing them as 'Asuras' of the gods, meaning they possess immense power and are guardians of cosmic order. They are seen as protectors and nurturers of human settlements ('kṣitīḥ'). The prayer is for them to make these lands fertile and prosperous, and for the speaker and his people to be able to perceive and benefit from their divine presence and blessings, supported by heaven, earth, and time.

You two are the bridges of cosmic order, holding many snares for disorder. It is hard for a mortal sinner to escape them. O Mitra and Varuna, by your path of order, may we cross over troubles like a boat across waters.
This verse describes Mitra and Varuna as a bridge ('setū') that upholds cosmic order ('ṛtasya'). They are portrayed as powerful entities that have many snares ('bhūripāśau') for those who act against order ('anṛtasya'). It is difficult for mortals who are wicked ('ripave martyāya') to escape these consequences. The speaker, invoking them, asks to be carried across difficulties ('duritā') just as a boat crosses waters, using their path of order as a guide.

ā́ no mitrāvaruṇā havyájuṣṭiṁ ghr̥taír gávyūtim ukṣatam íḷābhiḥ práti vām átra váram ā́ jánāya pr̥ṇītám udnó divyásya cā́roḥ
Come to us, O Mitra and Varuna, with your enjoyment of offerings; anoint our pasture with ghee and oblations. Bestow upon the people here abundant, excellent, divine nourishment.
This stanza is a direct appeal to Mitra and Varuna to approach the sacrificial offering. The speaker asks them to 'anoint' or bless their offering ('havyajuṣṭim') and their 'pasture' ('gavyūtim') with the sacred substances of clarified butter ('ghṛta') and other oblations ('iḷābhiḥ'). They are also asked to pour down from the sky ('divyasya') abundant and delightful nourishment ('udnaḥ cāroḥ') for the people, specifically for the benefit of humanity ('janāya').

eṣá stómo varuṇa mitra túbhyaṁ sómaḥ śukró ná vāyáve 'yāmi aviṣṭáṁ dhíyo jigr̥tám púraṁdhīr yūyám pāta svastíbhiḥ sádā naḥ
This praise, O Varuna and Mitra, is for you, like bright Soma for Vayu. Protect our thoughts, grasp our mental insights. You all, protect us always with blessings.
The stanza concludes with the speaker presenting this hymn ('stomaḥ') as an offering to Mitra and Varuna, comparing it to the bright Soma juice offered to Vayu. The speaker implores Mitra and Varuna to be receptive ('aviṣṭam') to their thoughts and praises ('dhiyaḥ') and to grasp ('jigr̥tam') their spiritual intentions and plans ('puramdhiḥ'). The final plea is for the deities to always protect the devotees ('naḥ') with blessings and well-being ('svastibhiḥ').
