píbā sómam abhí yám ugra tárda ūrváṁ gávyam máhi gr̥ṇāná indra ví yó dhr̥ṣṇo vádhiṣo vajrahasta víśvā vr̥trám amitríyā śávobhiḥ

Drink, mighty Indra, the Soma, for which, praised by us, you break through the strongholds. You, the bold one, wielding the thunderbolt, have struck down Vritra and all enemies with your powers.

Stanza 6.17.2

May you drink it, who are triumphant and strong, sharp-featured, a bull among the wise, who breaks the enclosures, wields the thunderbolt, and is swift. Indra, pierce through all these riches (foods/battles).

Stanza 6.17.3

Drink thus, as before, and let it please you. Hear us, grow strong with hymns. Make the sun appear, fill us with nourishment, kill the enemies, and free the cattle, Indra.

Stanza 6.17.4

té tvā mádā br̥hád indra svadhāva imé pītā́ ukṣayanta dyumántam mahā́m ánūnaṁ tavásaṁ víbhūtim matsarā́so jarhr̥ṣanta prasā́ham

These draughts have invigorated you, Indra, strong one, self-sustainer. Having drunk them, they made you great, full of splendor, immense, strong, and all-conquering. May the exhilarating draughts greatly delight you.

Stanza 6.17.5

By these (Soma draughts), O Indra, gladdened, you brought forth the sun and the dawn. You broke apart the strong (enclosures), the great mountain that encompassed the cattle, and shaking it from its place, you released them.

Stanza 6.17.6

By your might, your wisdom, and your wondrous deeds, you placed the ripe (milk) in the raw udders. You opened the firm doors for the dawn's cows. You released the cattle from the obstructions and vastness, O Indra, with the Angirases.

Stanza 6.17.7

You spread out the great Earth, and you, mighty Indra, propped up the vast sky. You supported both worlds, the divine mothers, the ancient, powerful mothers of the cosmic order.

Stanza 6.17.8

ádha tvā víśve purá indra devā́ ékaṁ tavásaṁ dadhire bhárāya ádevo yád abhy aúhiṣṭa devā́n svàrṣātā vr̥ṇata índram átra

Then all the gods installed you, Indra, as their one strong champion for the battle. When the godless one attacked the gods, they chose you, Indra, to win the heavenly light.

Stanza 6.17.9

ádha dyaúś cit te ápa sā́ nú vájrād dvitā́namad bhiyásā svásya manyóḥ áhiṁ yád índro abhy óhasānaṁ ní cid viśvā́yuḥ śayáthe jaghā́na

Then indeed, heaven itself bent backward from your bolt, in fear of your anger. When Indra attacked the assailing dragon, the one living everywhere, he killed it in its lair.

Stanza 6.17.10

ádha tváṣṭā te mahá ugra vájraṁ sahásrabhr̥ṣṭiṁ vavr̥tac chatā́śrim níkāmam arámaṇasaṁ yéna návantam áhiṁ sám piṇag r̥jīṣin

Then, O mighty and bold one, Tvashṭar fashioned for you the thunderbolt, with a thousand points and a hundred edges. With that weapon, desiring it, you crushed the serpent.

Stanza 6.17.11

May all the Maruts, in agreement, strengthen you, Indra. Pūṣan and Viṣṇu poured three vessels of the exhilarating Soma, the Vritra-slayer, for you. We obtained the great buffaloes for you.

Stanza 6.17.12

You released the great, rushing wave of the waters, the obstructed floods of the rivers. Following their downward paths, Indra, you directed their courses towards the ocean.

Stanza 6.17.13

May this new hymn and our prayer bring you, Indra, the mighty, strong, ageless, and victorious one, well-armed with the thunderbolt, to protect us.

Stanza 6.17.14

sá no vā́jāya śrávasa iṣé ca rāyé dhehi dyumáta indra víprān bharádvāje nr̥váta indra sūrī́n diví ca smaidhi pā́rye na indra

Indra, bestow upon us for strength, fame, food, and riches, brilliant and heroic singers. Indra, give us heroic patrons, and may you be present for us in difficult times.

Stanza 6.17.15

ayā́ vā́jaṁ deváhitaṁ sanema mádema śatáhimāḥ suvī́rāḥ

With this, may we obtain the divinely appointed strength, and may we rejoice for a hundred years with brave sons.
