This verse praises Agni as the divine recipient of human devotion. It states that any mortal who dedicates their thoughts and actions (duvaḥ, dhiyam) through hymns (dhītibhiḥ) to Agni, will be favored by the god. Such a person, the verse implies, will receive Agni's protection and be sustained with abundance (iṣam) and prosperity (āvase). O Agni, indeed, in many ways, men strive for your protection. The righteous, through their vows, seek to overcome the enemy who lacks order and ritual.
This verse addresses Agni, highlighting a dualistic struggle. It describes how both righteous (āyavaḥ) and unrighteous (dasyu-like) forces, driven by different motivations, strive for Agni's favor or protection (avase). The righteous, characterized by their adherence to rituals and vows (vratāiḥ), actively seek to overcome the 'riteless' (avratam) enemy. The plural "rāyaḥ" suggests that wealth and prosperity are also part of this contest.
