प्र स॒म्राजे॑ बृ॒हद॑र्चा गभी॒रं ब्रह्म॑ प्रि॒यं वरु॑णाय श्रु॒ताय॑ | वि यो ज॒घान॑ शमि॒तेव॒ चर्मो॑प॒स्तिरे॑ पृथि॒वीं सूर्या॑य ||

Sing forth a grand and solemn hymn, beloved and glorious to Varuna, the sovereign ruler! He, like a sacrificer who has struck down the victim, has spread out the earth as a skin for Surya.
This verse is an invocation to Varuna, the celestial ruler, asking the singer to praise him with a grand and profound hymn. It describes Varuna's power in spreading out the earth like a skin, preparing it for the sun's journey.

Varuna spread out the air in the forests, placed sustenance in horses, milk in cows, intellect in hearts, fire in the waters, the sun in the sky, and Soma on the mountain.
This verse highlights Varuna's role as the cosmic organizer, who not only established the vast expanse of the atmosphere within the forests, but also imbued various entities with their essential qualities: milk in cows, vigor in horses, intellect in hearts, fire in waters, the sun in the sky, and Soma on the mountain.

Varuna released the downward-opening cask, and it flowed through the sky, the earth, and the atmosphere. By this, the king of all worlds nourishes the earth like barley sown by the rain.
Varuna is depicted as releasing a cosmic "cask" or container, which pours down its contents through the heavens, earth, and atmosphere. As the universal king, he uses this force to nurture the earth, making it fertile like barley sown after rain.

When Varuna desires, he moistens the earth, the sky, and the land. Then the mountains are covered by clouds, and the heroes, exerting their strength, break free.
When Varuna desires to bestow sustenance ('milk'), he moistens the earth, the sky, and the atmosphere. Following this, the mountains become clothed in clouds, and the powerful beings (heroes) release their energy, breaking free.

The speaker proclaims Varuna's great magical power, which is so vast that none can comprehend its full extent. Varuna, the immortal lord, established the earth by measuring it with the sun, as if using a measuring rod, and remains steady in the atmosphere.

The speaker asks Varuna to release them from all transgressions, whether committed intentionally, like cheating in a game, or unintentionally, by falsehood, or even by ignorance. The plea is to be freed from these sins, like loosened bonds, so they can become beloved to Varuna.
