Stanza 5.40.1

आ या॒ह्यद्रि॑भिः सु॒तं सोमं॑ सोमपते पिब | वृष॑न्निन्द्र॒ वृष॑भिर्वृत्रहन्तम ||

ā́ yāhy ádribhiḥ sutáṁ sómaṁ somapate piba vŕ̥ṣann indra vŕ̥ṣabhir vr̥trahantama

Come forth with the pressing stones, O Soma-Lord, Indra! Drink the Soma! O powerful, O Indra, strongest of slayers of Vritra, come with the strong ones!

Stanza 5.40.2

वृषा॒ ग्रावा॒ वृषा॒ मदो॒ वृषा॒ सोमो॑ अ॒यं सु॒तः | वृष॑न्निन्द्र॒ वृष॑भिर्वृत्रहन्तम ||

vŕ̥ṣā grā́vā vŕ̥ṣā mádo vŕ̥ṣā sómo ayáṁ sutáḥ vŕ̥ṣann indra vŕ̥ṣabhir vr̥trahantama

Strong is the pressing stone, strong is the intoxication, strong is this Soma that has been pressed! O powerful Indra, with the strong ones!

Stanza 5.40.3

वृषा॑ त्वा॒ वृष॑णं हुवे॒ वज्रि॑ञ्चि॒त्राभि॑रू॒तिभिः॑ | वृष॑न्निन्द्र॒ वृष॑भिर्वृत्रहन्तम ||

vŕ̥ṣā tvā vŕ̥ṣaṇaṁ huve vájriñ citrā́bhir ūtíbhiḥ vŕ̥ṣann indra vŕ̥ṣabhir vr̥trahantama

As strong, I call upon you, the strong one, O wielder of the thunderbolt, with varied aids! O powerful Indra, with the strong ones!

Stanza 5.40.4

ऋ॒जी॒षी व॒ज्री वृ॑ष॒भस्तु॑रा॒षाट् छु॒ष्मी राजा॑ वृत्र॒हा सो॑म॒पावा॑ | यु॒क्त्वा हरि॑भ्या॒मुप॑ यासद॒र्वाङ्माध्यं॑दिने॒ सव॑ने मत्स॒दिन्द्रः॑ ||

r̥jīṣī́ vajrī́ vr̥ṣabhás turāṣā́ṭ chuṣmī́ rā́jā vr̥trahā́ somapā́vā yuktvā́ háribhyām úpa yāsad arvā́ṅ mā́dhyaṁdine sávane matsad índraḥ

The vigorous, thunder-wielding, strong, mighty conqueror, the powerful king, the vr̥tra-slayer, the Soma-drinker, may he come yoked with the bay horses, may Indra rejoice with him at the midday rite.

Stanza 5.40.5

यत्त्वा॑ सूर्य॒ स्व॑र्भानु॒स्तम॒सावि॑ध्यदासु॒रः | अक्षे॑त्रवि॒द्यथा॑ मु॒ग्धो भुव॑नान्यदीधयुः ||

yát tvā sūrya svàrbhānus támasā́vidhyad āsuráḥ ákṣetravid yáthā mugdhó bhúvanāny adīdhayuḥ

When, O Surya, the Asura's descendant Svarbhanu pierced you with darkness, all beings looked as if bewildered, not knowing where they stood.

Stanza 5.40.6

स्व॑र्भानो॒रध॒ यदि॑न्द्र मा॒या अ॒वो दि॒वो वर्त॑माना अ॒वाह॑न् | गू॒ळ्हं सूर्यं॒ तम॒साप॑व्रतेन तु॒रीये॑ण॒ ब्रह्म॑णाविन्द॒दत्रिः॑ ||

svàrbhānor ádha yád indra māyā́ avó divó vártamānā avā́han gūḷháṁ sū́ryaṁ támasā́pavratena turī́yeṇa bráhmaṇāvindad átriḥ

When, O Indra, Svarbhanu's magic, spreading beneath the sky, obstructed the sun, Atri discovered the sun hidden by the fourth, non-functioning knowledge (or ritual).

Stanza 5.40.7

मा मामि॒मं तव॒ सन्त॑मत्र इर॒स्या द्रु॒ग्धो भि॒यसा॒ नि गा॑रीत् | त्वं मि॒त्रो अ॑सि स॒त्यरा॑धा॒स्तौ मे॒हाव॑तं॒ वरु॑णश्च॒ राजा॑ ||

mā́ mā́m imáṁ táva sántam atra irasyā́ drugdhó bhiyásā ní gārīt tvám mitró asi satyárādhās taú mehā́vataṁ váruṇaś ca rā́jā

Let not this enemy, filled with wrath and fear, swallow me! For I am yours, O Atri. You are Mitra, the possessor of true bounty; may you and King Varuna help me!

Stanza 5.40.8

ग्राव्णो॑ ब्र॒ह्मा यु॑युजा॒नः स॑प॒र्यन्की॒रिणा॑ दे॒वान्नम॑सोप॒शिक्ष॑न् | अत्रिः॒ सूर्य॑स्य दि॒वि चक्षु॒राधा॒त्स्व॑र्भानो॒रप॑ मा॒या अ॑घुक्षत् ||

grā́vṇo brahmā́ yuyujānáḥ saparyán kīríṇā devā́n námasopaśíkṣan átriḥ sū́ryasya diví cákṣur ā́dhāt svàrbhānor ápa māyā́ aghukṣat

Atri, the priest, having set the pressing stones, and serving the gods with adoration, established the sun's eye in the sky; he drove away Svarbhanu's magic.

Stanza 5.40.9

यं वै सूर्यं॒ स्व॑र्भानु॒स्तम॒सावि॑ध्यदासु॒रः | अत्र॑य॒स्तमन्व॑विन्दन्न॒ह्य१॒॑न्ये अश॑क्नुवन् ||

yáṁ vaí sū́ryaṁ svàrbhānus támasā́vidhyad āsuráḥ átrayas tám ánv avindan nahy ànyé áśaknuvan

The Atri clan found the sun, whom the Asura Svarbhanu had pierced with darkness. Others could not find him.
