Stanza 4.1.1

त्वां ह्य॑ग्ने॒ सद॒मित्स॑म॒न्यवो॑ दे॒वासो॑ दे॒वम॑र॒तिं न्ये॑रि॒र इति॒ क्रत्वा॑ न्येरि॒रे | अम॑र्त्यं यजत॒ मर्त्ये॒ष्वा दे॒वमादे॑वं जनत॒ प्रचे॑तसं॒ विश्व॒मादे॑वं जनत॒ प्रचे॑तसम् ||

tvā́ṁ hy àgne sádam ít samanyávo devā́so devám aratíṁ nyerirá íti krátvā nyeriré ámartyaṁ yajata mártyeṣv ā́ devám ā́devaṁ janata prácetasaṁ víśvam ā́devaṁ janata prácetasam

You, O Agni, have always been sent by the gods, who are of one mind, as a divine messenger. They intentionally sent you forth. They have brought forth you, the immortal among mortals, the worshipful one, the wise, the god-loving one; they have brought forth you, the all-pervading, god-loving sage.

Stanza 4.1.2

स भ्रात॑रं॒ वरु॑णमग्न॒ आ व॑वृत्स्व दे॒वाँ अच्छा॑ सुम॒ती य॒ज्ञव॑नसं॒ ज्येष्ठं॑ य॒ज्ञव॑नसम् | ऋ॒तावा॑नमादि॒त्यं च॑र्षणी॒धृतं॒ राजा॑नं चर्षणी॒धृत॑म् ||

sá bhrā́taraṁ váruṇam agna ā́ vavr̥tsva devā́m̐ áchā sumatī́ yajñávanasaṁ jyéṣṭhaṁ yajñávanasam r̥tā́vānam ādityáṁ carṣaṇīdhŕ̥taṁ rā́jānaṁ carṣaṇīdhŕ̥tam

O Agni, may you turn yourself towards your brother Varuna and towards the gods with good favor, to the one who accepts the sacrifice, the eldest, the righteous follower of cosmic order, the Aditya who supports humankind, the king who supports humankind.

Stanza 4.1.3

सखे॒ सखा॑यम॒भ्या व॑वृत्स्वा॒शुं न च॒क्रं रथ्ये॑व॒ रंह्या॒स्मभ्यं॑ दस्म॒ रंह्या॑ | अग्ने॑ मृळी॒कं वरु॑णे॒ सचा॑ विदो म॒रुत्सु॑ वि॒श्वभा॑नुषु || तो॒काय॑ तु॒जे शु॑शुचान॒ शं कृ॑ध्य॒स्मभ्यं॑ दस्म॒ शं कृ॑धि |

sákhe sákhāyam abhy ā́ vavr̥tsvāśúṁ ná cakráṁ ráthyeva ráṁhyāsmábhyaṁ dasma ráṁhyā ágne mr̥ḷīkáṁ váruṇe sácā vido marútsu viśvábhānuṣu tokā́ya tujé śuśucāna śáṁ kr̥dhy asmábhyaṁ dasma śáṁ kr̥dhi

Friend, approach your friend (Varuna) with us, swiftly like a chariot wheel following a swift horse, for our sake, O wondrous one, swiftly. O Agni, bring us comfort with Varuna, with the Maruts who shine everywhere. You, O radiant one, bless us for offspring and for progress; O wondrous one, bless us!

Stanza 4.1.4

त्वं नो॑ अग्ने॒ वरु॑णस्य वि॒द्वान्दे॒वस्य॒ हेळोऽव॑ यासिसीष्ठाः | यजि॑ष्ठो॒ वह्नि॑तमः॒ शोशु॑चानो॒ विश्वा॒ द्वेषां॑सि॒ प्र मु॑मुग्ध्य॒स्मत् ||

tváṁ no agne váruṇasya vidvā́n devásya héḷó .ava yāsisīṣṭhāḥ yájiṣṭho váhnitamaḥ śóśucāno víśvā dvéṣāṁsi prá mumugdhy asmát

You, O Agni, knowing Varuna, may you turn away his divine displeasure from us. You, the best sacrificer, the best carrier of offerings, flaming brightly, remove from us all hatred.

Stanza 4.1.5

स त्वं नो॑ अग्नेऽव॒मो भ॑वो॒ती नेदि॑ष्ठो अ॒स्या उ॒षसो॒ व्यु॑ष्टौ | अव॑ यक्ष्व नो॒ वरु॑णं॒ ररा॑णो वी॒हि मृ॑ळी॒कं सु॒हवो॑ न एधि ||

sá tváṁ no agne 'vamó bhavotī́ nédiṣṭho asyā́ uṣáso vyùṣṭau áva yakṣva no váruṇaṁ rárāṇo vīhí mr̥ḷīkáṁ suhávo na edhi

May you, O Agni, be our nearest helper and our closest friend as this dawn breaks. Generously, by sacrifice, appease Varuna for us. Hear our call readily, be easily invoked for us.

Stanza 4.1.6

अ॒स्य श्रेष्ठा॑ सु॒भग॑स्य सं॒दृग्दे॒वस्य॑ चि॒त्रत॑मा॒ मर्त्ये॑षु | शुचि॑ घृ॒तं न त॒प्तमघ्न्या॑याः स्पा॒र्हा दे॒वस्य॑ मं॒हने॑व धे॒नोः ||

asyá śréṣṭhā subhágasya saṁdŕ̥g devásya citrátamā mártyeṣu śúci ghr̥táṁ ná taptám ághnyāyā spārhā́ devásya maṁháneva dhenóḥ

His, the fortunate god's, appearance is excellent, and most brilliant among mortals. Pure, heated butter from a cow, like the desire for it, is the god's appearance, like the bounty of a milch-cow.

Stanza 4.1.7

त्रिर॑स्य॒ ता प॑र॒मा स॑न्ति स॒त्या स्पा॒र्हा दे॒वस्य॒ जनि॑मान्य॒ग्नेः | अ॒न॒न्ते अ॒न्तः परि॑वीत॒ आगा॒च्छुचिः॑ शु॒क्रो अ॒र्यो रोरु॑चानः ||

trír asya tā́ paramā́ santi satyā́ spārhā́ devásya jánimāny agnéḥ ananté antáḥ párivīta ā́gāc chúciḥ śukró aryó rórucānaḥ

His three highest, true, and desired manifestations exist. Enveloped in the infinite, pure, brilliant, and noble being has come, shining brightly.

Stanza 4.1.8

स दू॒तो विश्वेद॒भि व॑ष्टि॒ सद्मा॒ होता॒ हिर॑ण्यरथो॒ रंसु॑जिह्वः | रो॒हिद॑श्वो वपु॒ष्यो॑ वि॒भावा॒ सदा॑ र॒ण्वः पि॑तु॒मती॑व सं॒सत् ||

sá dūtó víśvéd abhí vaṣṭi sádmā hótā híraṇyaratho ráṁsujihvaḥ rohídaśvo vapuṣyò vibhā́vā sádā raṇváḥ pitumátīva saṁsát

He, the messenger, longs for all seats, the Hotri with the golden chariot, with the lovely tongue, with the red horses, of marvelous appearance, brilliant, always joyful like an assembly abundant in food.

Stanza 4.1.9

स चे॑तय॒न्मनु॑षो य॒ज्ञब॑न्धुः॒ प्र तं म॒ह्या र॑श॒नया॑ नयन्ति | स क्षे॑त्यस्य॒ दुर्या॑सु॒ साध॑न्दे॒वो मर्त॑स्य सधनि॒त्वमा॑प ||

sá cetayan mánuṣo yajñábandhuḥ prá tám mahyā́ raśanáyā nayanti sá kṣety asya dúryāsu sā́dhan devó mártasya sadhanitvám āpa

He, the kinsman of sacrifice, has enlightened men. They lead him forward by a great rope. He dwells in his (the mortal's) dwelling, accomplishing (his task). The god has obtained the companionship of the mortal.

Stanza 4.1.10

स तू नो॑ अ॒ग्निर्न॑यतु प्रजा॒नन्नच्छा॒ रत्नं॑ दे॒वभ॑क्तं॒ यद॑स्य | धि॒या यद्विश्वे॑ अ॒मृता॒ अकृ॑ण्व॒न्द्यौष्पि॒ता ज॑नि॒ता स॒त्यमु॑क्षन् ||

sá tū́ no agnír nayatu prajānánn áchā rátnaṁ devábhaktaṁ yád asya dhiyā́ yád víśve amŕ̥tā ákr̥ṇvan dyaúṣ pitā́ janitā́ satyám ukṣan

May this Agni, the knowing one, lead us towards the treasure belonging to the gods, which they enjoy. That which all the immortals have created by their thought, which Dyaus, the father, the begetter (has created): that real (treasure) they have sprinkled.

Stanza 4.1.11

स जा॑यत प्रथ॒मः प॒स्त्या॑सु म॒हो बु॒ध्ने रज॑सो अ॒स्य योनौ॑ | अ॒पाद॑शी॒र्षा गु॒हमा॑नो॒ अन्ता॒योयु॑वानो वृष॒भस्य॑ नी॒ळे ||

sá jāyata prathamáḥ pastyāā̀su mahó budhné rájaso asyá yónau apā́d aśīrṣā́ guhámāno ántāyóyuvāno vr̥ṣabhásya nīḷé

He was born first in the homes, at the bottom of the great (air), in the womb of this air. Footless, headless, hiding himself, drawing himself together in the bull's lair.

Stanza 4.1.12

प्र शर्ध॑ आर्त प्रथ॒मं वि॑प॒न्याँ ऋ॒तस्य॒ योना॑ वृष॒भस्य॑ नी॒ळे | स्पा॒र्हो युवा॑ वपु॒ष्यो॑ वि॒भावा॑ स॒प्त प्रि॒यासो॑ऽजनयन्त॒ वृष्णे॑ ||

prá śárdha ārta prathamáṁ vipanyám̐ r̥tásya yónā vr̥ṣabhásya nīḷé spārhó yúvā vapuṣyò vibhā́vā saptá priyā́so 'janayanta vŕ̥ṣṇe

The host came forth wonderfully at first, in the home of Rita, in the nest of the bull, desired, young, of marvelous appearance, and brilliant. Seven dear ones were born for the strong one.

Stanza 4.1.13

अ॒स्माक॒मत्र॑ पि॒तरो॑ मनु॒ष्या॑ अ॒भि प्र से॑दुर्ऋ॒तमा॑शुषा॒णाः | अश्म॑व्रजाः सु॒दुघा॑ व॒व्रे अ॒न्तरुदु॒स्रा आ॑जन्नु॒षसो॑ हुवा॒नाः ||

asmā́kam átra pitáro manuṣyāā̀ abhí prá sedur r̥tám āśuṣāṇā́ḥ áśmavrajāḥ sudúghā vavré antár úd usrā́ ājann uṣáso huvānā́ḥ

Here our human fathers have sat down, aspiring after Rita. Invoking the dawns, they have driven out the milch-cows which dwelt in the rock-stable, in the prison.

Stanza 4.1.14

ते म॑र्मृजत ददृ॒वांसो॒ अद्रिं॒ तदे॑षाम॒न्ये अ॒भितो॒ वि वो॑चन् | प॒श्वय॑न्त्रासो अ॒भि का॒रम॑र्चन्वि॒दन्त॒ ज्योति॑श्चकृ॒पन्त॑ धी॒भिः ||

té marmr̥jata dadr̥vā́ṁso ádriṁ tád eṣām anyé abhíto ví vocan paśváyantrāso abhí kārám arcan vidánta jyótiś cakr̥pánta dhībhíḥ

Having rent the rock they cleaned themselves. Others around told forth that (deed) of theirs. Taking … as an instrument (?), they sang triumphantly. They found the light; they chanted their prayers.

Stanza 4.1.15

ते ग॑व्य॒ता मन॑सा दृ॒ध्रमु॒ब्धं गा ये॑मा॒नं परि॒ षन्त॒मद्रि॑म् | दृ॒ळ्हं नरो॒ वच॑सा॒ दैव्ये॑न व्र॒जं गोम॑न्तमु॒शिजो॒ वि व॑व्रुः ||

té gavyatā́ mánasā dr̥dhrám ubdháṁ gā́ yemānám pári ṣántam ádrim dr̥ḷháṁ náro vácasā daívyena vrajáṁ gómantam uśíjo ví vavruḥ

Longing for the cows in their mind, those men, the Usigs, have opened with godly words the fast-holding, closed rock, which enclosed and encompassed the cows, the firm stable full of cows.

Stanza 4.1.16

ते म॑न्वत प्रथ॒मं नाम॑ धे॒नोस्त्रिः स॒प्त मा॒तुः प॑र॒माणि॑ विन्दन् | तज्जा॑न॒तीर॒भ्य॑नूषत॒ व्रा आ॒विर्भु॑वदरु॒णीर्य॒शसा॒ गोः ||

té manvata prathamáṁ nā́ma dhenós tríḥ saptá mātúḥ paramā́ṇi vindan táj jānatī́r abhy ànūṣata vrā́ āvír bhuvad aruṇī́r yaśásā góḥ

They have devised the first name of the milch-cow; they have found the three times seven highest (names or essences) of the mother. The hosts, understanding this, acclaimed. The red one became visible through the brilliant (milk?) of the cow.

Stanza 4.1.17

नेश॒त्तमो॒ दुधि॑तं॒ रोच॑त॒ द्यौरुद्दे॒व्या उ॒षसो॑ भा॒नुर॑र्त | आ सूर्यो॑ बृह॒तस्ति॑ष्ठ॒दज्राँ॑ ऋ॒जु मर्ते॑षु वृजि॒ना च॒ पश्य॑न् ||

néśat támo dúdhitaṁ rócata dyaúr úd devyā́ uṣáso bhānúr arta ā́ sū́ryo br̥hatás tiṣṭhad ájrām̐ r̥jú márteṣu vr̥jinā́ ca páśyan

The confused darkness disappeared; the sky appeared in splendor; the shining beam of the goddess Dawn rose up. The Sun ascended to the wide expanses, beholding right and wrong deeds among the mortals.

Stanza 4.1.18

आदित्प॒श्चा बु॑बुधा॒ना व्य॑ख्य॒न्नादिद्रत्नं॑ धारयन्त॒ द्युभ॑क्तम् | विश्वे॒ विश्वा॑सु॒ दुर्या॑सु दे॒वा मित्र॑ धि॒ये व॑रुण स॒त्यम॑स्तु ||

ā́d ít paścā́ bubudhānā́ vy àkhyann ā́d íd rátnaṁ dhārayanta dyúbhaktam víśve víśvāsu dúryāsu devā́ mítra dhiyé varuṇa satyám astu

Then, afterwards, being awoke they looked around; then they took that treasure given by Heaven, all the gods in all the houses. O Mitra, may true (fulfilment) belong to (our) prayer, O Varuna!

Stanza 4.1.19

अच्छा॑ वोचेय शुशुचा॒नम॒ग्निं होता॑रं वि॒श्वभ॑रसं॒ यजि॑ष्ठम् | शुच्यूधो॑ अतृण॒न्न गवा॒मन्धो॒ न पू॒तं परि॑षिक्तमं॒शोः ||

áchā voceya śuśucānám agníṁ hótāraṁ viśvábharasaṁ yájiṣṭham śúcy ū́dho atr̥ṇan ná gávām ándho ná pūtám páriṣiktam aṁśóḥ

I will address flaming Agni, the Hotri, the supporter of everything, the best sacrificer. He has perforated, as it were, the pure udder of the cows, (and has made flow the milk) purified like the poured sap of the Soma shoots.

Stanza 4.1.20

विश्वे॑षा॒मदि॑तिर्य॒ज्ञिया॑नां॒ विश्वे॑षा॒मति॑थि॒र्मानु॑षाणाम् | अ॒ग्निर्दे॒वाना॒मव॑ आवृणा॒नः सु॑मृळी॒को भ॑वतु जा॒तवे॑दाः ||

víśveṣām áditir yajñíyānāṁ víśveṣām átithir mā́nuṣāṇām agnír devā́nām áva āvr̥ṇānáḥ sumr̥ḷīkó bhavatu jātávedāḥ

He, the Aditi (i.e., the freedom) of all the worshipful gods, the guest of all men, Agni, choosing (for us) the protection of all gods—may he, Gâtavedas, be merciful.
