Stanza 10.98.1

बृह॑स्पते॒ प्रति॑ मे दे॒वता॑मिहि मि॒त्रो वा॒ यद्वरु॑णो॒ वासि॑ पू॒षा | आ॒दि॒त्यैर्वा॒ यद्वसु॑भिर्म॒रुत्वा॒न्त्स प॒र्जन्यं॒ शंत॑नवे वृषाय ||

bŕ̥haspate práti me devátām ihi mitró vā yád váruṇo vā́si pūṣā́ ādityaír vā yád vásubhir marútvān sá parjányaṁ śáṁtanave vr̥ṣāya

O Brihaspati, come to my offering! Come as Mitra, or Varuna, or Pushan. Come with the Vasus, or the Adityas, or the Maruts, and may you, O Parjanya, rain for Shantanu.

Stanza 10.98.2

आ दे॒वो दू॒तो अ॑जि॒रश्चि॑कि॒त्वान्त्वद्दे॑वापे अ॒भि माम॑गच्छत् | प्र॒ती॒ची॒नः प्रति॒ मामा व॑वृत्स्व॒ दधा॑मि ते द्यु॒मतीं॒ वाच॑मा॒सन् ||

ā́ devó dūtó ajiráś cikitvā́n tvád devāpe abhí mā́m agachat pratīcīnáḥ práti mā́m ā́ vavr̥tsva dádhāmi te dyumátīṁ vā́cam āsán

The divine, intelligent, and swift envoy has come to me, O Devapi! Turn towards me, and I will place brilliant speech in your mouth.

Stanza 10.98.3

अ॒स्मे धे॑हि द्यु॒मतीं॒ वाच॑मा॒सन्बृह॑स्पते अनमी॒वामि॑षि॒राम् | यया॑ वृ॒ष्टिं शंत॑नवे॒ वना॑व दि॒वो द्र॒प्सो मधु॑माँ॒ आ वि॑वेश ||

asmé dhehi dyumátīṁ vā́cam āsán bŕ̥haspate anamīvā́m iṣirā́m yáyā vr̥ṣṭíṁ śáṁtanave vánāva divó drapsó mádhumām̐ ā́ viveśa

O Brihaspati, place in my mouth speech that is brilliant, healthy, and vigorous, through which we may win rain for Shantanu. A honey-like drop from the sky has entered me.

Stanza 10.98.4

आ नो॑ द्र॒प्सा मधु॑मन्तो विश॒न्त्विन्द्र॑ दे॒ह्यधि॑रथं स॒हस्र॑म् | नि षी॑द हो॒त्रमृ॑तु॒था य॑जस्व दे॒वान्दे॑वापे ह॒विषा॑ सपर्य ||

ā́ no drapsā́ mádhumanto viśantv índra dehy ádhirathaṁ sahásram ní ṣīda hotrám r̥tuthā́ yajasva devā́n devāpe havíṣā saparya

May the sweet rain drops come to us, O Indra! Grant us a thousand wagon-loads. Be seated properly, perform the sacrifice in due order, and serve the gods with offerings, O Devapi.

Stanza 10.98.5

आ॒र्ष्टि॒षे॒णो हो॒त्रमृषि॑र्नि॒षीद॑न्दे॒वापि॑र्देवसुम॒तिं चि॑कि॒त्वान् | स उत्त॑रस्मा॒दध॑रं समु॒द्रम॒पो दि॒व्या अ॑सृजद्व॒र्ष्या॑ अ॒भि ||

ārṣṭiṣeṇó hotrám ŕ̥ṣir niṣī́dan devā́pir devasumatíṁ cikitvā́n sá úttarasmād ádharaṁ samudrám apó divyā́ asr̥jad varṣyāā̀ abhí

Devapi, the wise sage, son of R̥ishṭisheṇa, sat as the Hotar priest. Knowing the divine favor, he released the celestial rain-waters from the upper ocean to the lower.

Stanza 10.98.6

अ॒स्मिन्त्स॑मु॒द्रे अध्युत्त॑रस्मि॒न्नापो॑ दे॒वेभि॒र्निवृ॑ता अतिष्ठन् | ता अ॑द्रवन्नार्ष्टिषे॒णेन॑ सृ॒ष्टा दे॒वापि॑ना॒ प्रेषि॑ता मृ॒क्षिणी॑षु ||

asmín samudré ádhy úttarasminn ā́po devébhir nívr̥tā atiṣṭhan tā́ adravann ārṣṭiṣeṇéna sr̥ṣṭā́ devā́pinā préṣitā mr̥kṣíṇīṣu

The waters, held back by the gods in the highest ocean, stood still. Then, released by R̥ishṭisheṇa and sent by Devapi, they flowed into the ravines.

Stanza 10.98.7

यद्दे॒वापिः॒ शंत॑नवे पु॒रोहि॑तो हो॒त्राय॑ वृ॒तः कृ॒पय॒न्नदी॑धेत् | दे॒व॒श्रुतं॑ वृष्टि॒वनिं॒ ररा॑णो॒ बृह॒स्पति॒र्वाच॑मस्मा अयच्छत् ||

yád devā́piḥ śáṁtanave puróhito hotrā́ya vr̥táḥ kr̥páyann ádīdhet devaśrútaṁ vr̥ṣṭivániṁ rárāṇo bŕ̥haspátir vā́cam asmā ayachat

When Devapi, chosen as priest for Shantanu, prayed earnestly, Brihaspati, pleased, granted him a voice heard by the gods, one that wins the rain, and gave it to him.

Stanza 10.98.8

यं त्वा॑ दे॒वापिः॑ शुशुचा॒नो अ॑ग्न आर्ष्टिषे॒णो म॑नु॒ष्यः॑ समी॒धे | विश्वे॑भिर्दे॒वैर॑नुम॒द्यमा॑नः॒ प्र प॒र्जन्य॑मीरया वृष्टि॒मन्त॑म् ||

yáṁ tvā devā́piḥ śuśucānó agna ārṣṭiṣeṇó manuṣyàḥ samīdhé víśvebhir devaír anumadyámānaḥ prá parjányam īrayā vr̥ṣṭimántam

O Agni, whom Devapi, the mortal priest, has kindled with brilliance, and whom all the gods celebrate, you urge forth Parjanya, the bringer of rain.

Stanza 10.98.9

त्वां पूर्व॒ ऋष॑यो गी॒र्भिरा॑य॒न्त्वाम॑ध्व॒रेषु॑ पुरुहूत॒ विश्वे॑ | स॒हस्रा॒ण्यधि॑रथान्य॒स्मे आ नो॑ य॒ज्ञं रो॑हिद॒श्वोप॑ याहि ||

tvā́m pū́rva ŕ̥ṣayo gīrbhír āyan tvā́m adhvaréṣu puruhūta víśve sahásrāṇy ádhirathāny asmé ā́ no yajñáṁ rohidaśvópa yāhi

The ancient sages approached you with songs, O much-invoked one, and you are invoked in sacrifices. We have prepared thousands of wagon-loads for you. Come to our ritual, O Lord of the red horses.

Stanza 10.98.10

ए॒तान्य॑ग्ने नव॒तिर्नव॒ त्वे आहु॑ता॒न्यधि॑रथा स॒हस्रा॑ | तेभि॑र्वर्धस्व त॒न्वः॑ शूर पू॒र्वीर्दि॒वो नो॑ वृ॒ष्टिमि॑षि॒तो रि॑रीहि ||

etā́ny agne navatír náva tvé ā́hutāny ádhirathā sahásrā tébhir vardhasva tanvàḥ śūra pūrvī́r divó no vr̥ṣṭím iṣitó rirīhi

O Agni, these ninety-nine thousand wagon-loads have been offered to you. O hero, grow with these offerings, and send us the desired rain from the sky.

Stanza 10.98.11

ए॒तान्य॑ग्ने नव॒तिं स॒हस्रा॒ सं प्र य॑च्छ॒ वृष्ण॒ इन्द्रा॑य भा॒गम् | वि॒द्वान्प॒थ ऋ॑तु॒शो दे॑व॒याना॒नप्यौ॑ला॒नं दि॒वि दे॒वेषु॑ धेहि ||

etā́ny agne navatíṁ sahásrā sám prá yacha vŕ̥ṣṇa índrāya bhāgám vidvā́n pathá r̥tuśó devayā́nān ápy aulānáṁ diví devéṣu dhehi

O Agni, give these ninety thousand wagon-loads as Indra's portion, the powerful one. Knowing the divine paths, place Aulāna among the gods in the heavens.

Stanza 10.98.12

अग्ने॒ बाध॑स्व॒ वि मृधो॒ वि दु॒र्गहापामी॑वा॒मप॒ रक्षां॑सि सेध | अ॒स्मात्स॑मु॒द्राद्बृ॑ह॒तो दि॒वो नो॒ऽपां भू॒मान॒मुप॑ नः सृजे॒ह ||

ágne bā́dhasva ví mŕ̥dho ví durgáhā́pā́mīvām ápa rákṣāṁsi sedha asmā́t samudrā́d br̥ható divó no 'pā́m bhūmā́nam úpa naḥ sr̥jehá

O Agni, drive away the enemies and difficulties, repel illness and demons. From this great sky-ocean, send down a mighty flood of waters to us.
