बृह॑स्पते॒ प्रति॑ मे दे॒वता॑मिहि मि॒त्रो वा॒ यद्वरु॑णो॒ वासि॑ पू॒षा | आ॒दि॒त्यैर्वा॒ यद्वसु॑भिर्म॒रुत्वा॒न्त्स प॒र्जन्यं॒ शंत॑नवे वृषाय ||

O Brihaspati, come to my offering! Come as Mitra, or Varuna, or Pushan. Come with the Vasus, or the Adityas, or the Maruts, and may you, O Parjanya, rain for Shantanu.
This verse is a prayer to Brihaspati, the lord of prayer and cosmic order, to approach the sacrificial offering. The divine, intelligent, and swift envoy has come to me, O Devapi! Turn towards me, and I will place brilliant speech in your mouth.

Devapi, the wise sage, son of R̥ishṭisheṇa, sat as the Hotar priest. Knowing the divine favor, he released the celestial rain-waters from the upper ocean to the lower.
This verse describes Devapi, the wise sage (r̥ṣiḥ) and son of R̥ishṭisheṇa (ārṣṭiṣeṇáḥ), taking his seat as the Hotar priest. While knowing (cikitvān) the divine favor (devasumatim), he initiated the process. etā́ny agne navatír náva tvé ā́hutāny ádhirathā sahásrā tébhir vardhasva tanvàḥ śūra pūrvī́r divó no vr̥ṣṭím iṣitó rirīhi
O Agni, these ninety-nine thousand wagon-loads have been offered to you. O hero, grow with these offerings, and send us the desired rain from the sky.
This verse is a continued address to Agni. The speaker lists the offerings: ninety-nine thousand (navatīḥ nava sahasrā) wagon-loads ('adhirathā') that have been offered ('āhutāni'). The speaker praises Agni as 'śūra' (hero) and asks him to increase ('vardhasva') his many forms ('tanvaḥ pūrvīḥ') with these offerings. Finally, the prayer asks Agni to send down ('rirīhi') the desired rain ('vr̥ṣṭim iṣitāḥ') from the sky ('divaḥ') upon them ('naḥ').

O Agni, give these ninety thousand wagon-loads as Indra's portion, the powerful one. Knowing the divine paths, place Aulāna among the gods in the heavens.
This verse continues the address to Agni, referring to the ninety thousand ('navatīm sahāsrā') wagon-loads ('etāni adhirathā') as offerings. The speaker requests Agni to bestow this portion ('bhāgam') upon Indra ('Indrāya'), the 'vṛṣan' (bull, powerful one). Knowing ('vidvān') the paths ('pathaḥ') that the gods travel seasonally ('r̥tuśas devayānān'), Agni is asked to place ('dhehi') Aulāna ('aulānam') among the gods ('devēṣu') in the heavens ('divi').

This is a final plea to Agni. The speaker asks Agni to drive away ('bādhasva') the enemies ('mṛdhaḥ') and the difficulties ('durgahā'). They also ask him to repel ('sedha') illness ('amīvām') and demons ('rakṣāṃsi'). The verse concludes with a request for Agni to release ('sr̥ja') a great flood ('bhūmānam') of waters ('apām') from the sky ('br̥hataḥ divah') and this atmospheric ocean ('asmāt samudrāt') towards them ('nah').
