र॒क्षो॒हणं॑ वा॒जिन॒मा जि॑घर्मि मि॒त्रं प्रथि॑ष्ठ॒मुप॑ यामि॒ शर्म॑ | शिशा॑नो अ॒ग्निः क्रतु॑भिः॒ समि॑द्धः॒ स नो॒ दिवा॒ स रि॒षः पा॑तु॒ नक्त॑म् ||
rakṣoháṇaṁ vājínam ā́ jigharmi mitrám práthiṣṭham úpa yāmi śárma śíśāno agníḥ krátubhiḥ sámiddhaḥ sá no dívā sá riṣáḥ pātu náktam
I approach the demon-slayer, the powerful one, and come to the most expansive friend for protection. Agni, sharpened by rituals, may he protect us by day and from harm by night.

O Jātavedas, with teeth of iron, strike the demons with your flame. Seize the worshippers of foolish gods with your tongue; devour the flesh-eaters.

The worshipper asks Agni to declare which of the demons is performing evil deeds. Agni, the youngest and most powerful, is invoked to seize the demon with his fuel (samiḍhā) and to surrender him to the sight of the wise observer (nṛcakṣas).

O Agni, with your sharp gaze, guard the sacrifice. O Pracetaḥ, lead it to the Vasus. O burning one, attack the harmful demons.
The worshipper instructs Agni to guard the sacrifice with a sharp, penetrating gaze. Agni, the wise 'Pracetaḥ', is asked to lead the sacrifice towards the Vasus (divine beings). Agni, while burning fiercely, is told to attack the demons (rakṣāṃsi) that are intent on harm.

O Agni, let your noose surround the demon who harms the order with falsehood. O Jātavedas, roaring with flame, crush him before the singer.
Agni is invoked to cast a threefold noose around the demon who harms the cosmic order (ṛta) with falsehood. Agni, Jātavedas, is asked to roar loudly with his flame and to crush the demon before the singer of hymns.

O Agni, place your divine eye, like Atharvan's, on the demon with hoof-like feet. Burn the deceiver, who is unperceived, with celestial light.
Agni is asked to place his divine eye, like that of Atharvan, upon the demon characterized by hoof-like feet and deceit. Agni is to burn up this deceitful and unperceived being with celestial light.

O Agni, what curse the pair has uttered today, what heated words the worshippers have generated, whatever sharp arrow arises from angry thought, with that, pierce the demons in the heart.
The worshipper asks Agni to consider the curse uttered by a demon pair today, and the heated words spoken by the worshippers. Every sharp arrow of anger or thought that arises from the mind is to be used to pierce the demons in their hearts.

Agni is invoked to completely destroy the demons (yātudhāna) with his fervor and the fiends (rakṣas) with his fire. He is also asked to destroy the followers of foolish gods (mūradevān) and the insatiable monsters (asutŕ̥paḥ) with his intense burning.

The worshipper prays for the gods to destroy the wicked being today, and for his own curses to return upon him. Arrows, sharpened and potent, are invoked to pierce the liar in his vitals. The 'net of Viśva' (universal net) is mentioned as encompassing the demon.

Agni is asked to destroy those who consume human flesh, animal flesh, or steal milk meant for the gods. The demon's heads are to be severed with Agni's fiery fury.

The cow's milk is yearly. O watcher of men, may the demon not taste it. O Jātavedas, whoever desires to taste the first milk, pierce him with your flame in his vital parts.
The worshipper states that the cow gives milk annually. The demon is warned not to taste this milk. Agni (Jātavedas) is asked to pierce the vital parts of the demon, who desires to satiate himself with the first milk (piyūṣam), with his flame.

The demons are wished to drink the poison of cows. Aditi (the mother goddess) is asked to cast off these evil-doers. Savitar (the sun god) is invoked to deliver them to destruction and to deny them any share of plants and herbs.

Agni is praised for always slaying demons and for never being defeated by evil spirits in battle. He is urged to burn up the foolish, flesh-eating demons and to ensure none of them escape his divine weapon.

Agni is asked to protect the worshipper from above, below, behind, and in front. The worshipper also invokes Agni's fiercely burning, unfading flames to consume the sinner who utters evil speech.

O King, O Sage, protect us from behind, from in front, from below, from above. O Agni, our friend, immortal, guard us mortals into old age.
The worshipper asks Agni, the wise king, to protect him from all directions (behind, front, below, above). Agni, the eternal friend and immortal being, is asked to guard the mortal worshipper, just as a friend guards a friend, to old age.
