May the aligned heavens and earth, along with all the gods, uphold his strength. When Indra, having drunk the Soma, grew powerful and strong, he manifested his greatness and might.
The heavens and the earth, in accord with all the gods, are called upon to support Indra's might. This is in anticipation of Indra's powerful actions, which are fueled by drinking Soma, leading to his immense growth and strength.

Vishnu, holding the greatness with his might, flows forth with the sweet essence. Indra the powerful, with his companions, having slain Vritra, became worthy of choice.

When, bearing weapons for battle, you encountered Vritra, the serpent, to gain glory, then all the Maruts, with their power, here increased your terrible, desirable might.
This stanza describes Indra's confrontation with Vritra, the 'ahi' (serpent/dragon). Indra, armed and ready for battle, faced Vritra. In this intense struggle, the Maruts (storm gods) supported Indra, and together they amplified his formidable power and majesty.

Indra is depicted as possessing immense and ever-increasing power. He forcefully separated the heavens and earth, and then hurled his formidable iron thunderbolt. This act brought benefit and joy to those who worship Mitra and Varuna.

Then, to Indra's might and wrath, the swift ones approached. When the mighty one cut down Vritra with strength, he who held back the waters, surrounded by darkness.
The mighty powers and wrath of Indra are described as drawing near. The hymn recounts the moment Indra, the potent warrior, struck down Vritra with his strength. Vritra had been holding back the waters and was shrouded in darkness.

Performing the first heroic deeds, when striving together they came with might, darkness and gloom fell upon the slain. Indra, through his greatness, became the first to be invoked.
This stanza speaks of Indra's initial heroic deeds performed alongside other striving beings. As they engaged in these mighty actions, deep darkness descended upon the slain. Through these victories, Indra ultimately earned the privilege of being invoked first.

Then all the gods, with Soma-inspired eloquence, increased your mighty deeds. As Agni consumed dry food with his jaws, so did Indra consume Vritra, the serpent, with his blow.

The hymn concludes with a plea to Indra for abundant riches and good horses, asking that these gifts be remembered. The speaker wishes to overcome all difficulties by traveling on easy paths and asks Indra to find a safe crossing (ford) for them in the present day.
