Stanza 1.74.1
उ॒प॒प्र॒यन्तो॑ अध्व॒रं मन्त्रं॑ वोचेमा॒ग्नये॑ | आ॒रे अ॒स्मे च॑ शृण्व॒ते ||
upaprayánto adhvarám mántraṁ vocemāgnáye āré asmé ca śr̥ṇvaté
As we head towards the ritual, let's recite a hymn to Agni. He's listening to us, no matter how far away we are!
As people get ready for a ritual, they decide to offer a prayer to the fire god Agni. They want to make sure their prayer is heard, even if they are far away and Agni is listening.

यः स्नीहि॑तीषु पू॒र्व्यः सं॑जग्मा॒नासु॑ कृ॒ष्टिषु॑ | अर॑क्षद्दा॒शुषे॒ गय॑म् ||
yáḥ snī́hitīṣu pūrvyáḥ saṁjagmānā́su kr̥ṣṭíṣu árakṣad dāśúṣe gáyam
He, the ancient protector, safeguarded people's homes and communities when they came together, and kept their possessions safe for those who offered their devotion.
This verse praises Agni as a protector who, from ancient times, has guarded people and their homes when communities gathered, especially during conflicts, ensuring their well-being for those who offered sacrifices.

Agni is recognized as a divine messenger who brings offerings to a household, enjoys the sacred gifts, and blesses the ritual, making it wonderful for the devotee who hosts him.

People recognize Agni, the brilliant son of strength, as a divine being who is greatly admired for his offerings, his connection to the gods, and his possession of sacred space or resources.
